This was going to be some bit of linguistic drift or reformation or such that I shrugged my shoulders at and moved on with, expecting I would eventually live to see "hone in on" become the new canon.

But per the Google ngram viewer, it seems like it's actually fallen off in the last decade (at least in written published language).
