🕯️ On This Day in LGBTQ+ History: February 8 ⚠️ February 8, 2021: Arkansas advances legislation banning transgender youth from school sports By February 8, 2021, Arkansas lawmakers were actively advancing legislation that would bar transgender students from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity. Committee hearings and public statements during this period made clear that the bill was moving from proposal to operational reality, despite warnings from medical experts and civil rights organizations. The measure would later become the first statewide ban of its kind in the United States. At this moment in history: 🕯️Transgender students were publicly singled out and excluded from school activities 🕯️Families reported rising bullying, anxiety, and fear among affected youth 🕯️Schools faced pressure to enforce gender policing rather than student wellbeing 🕯️Community divisions deepened as misinformation spread through public debate February 8 serves as a context date marking when legislative discrimination against transgender youth became imminent rather than hypothetical. The advancement of the bill represented a significant setback for educational equality and student safety, signaling a broader national push to restrict LGBTQ+ rights through state law. Who continues to defend against this discrimination Nationally, organizations such as the ACLU, Lambda Legal, the Human Rights Campaign, and GLSEN mobilized legal challenges, research, and advocacy to oppose these bans. In Arkansas, groups including Equality Arkansas, the ACLU of Arkansas, and local educators and parents organized testimony, support networks, and public education efforts. Together, these defenders continue to affirm that inclusion in schools is a matter of dignity, health, and equal opportunity. #LGBTQHistory #TransYouth #EducationEquality #LGBTQArkansas

Brightly lit Vidalia High with a fresh library stands in stark contrast to worn Ferriday High, surrounded by barbed wire and 90% Black, highlighting persistent inequalities in Louisiana’s Concordia Parish, still under court-ordered desegregation after 60 years. Now, under pressure from Gov. Landry and AG, the Justice Department plans to start unwinding these historic orders, claiming they’re outdated relics. Critics view this as an erosion of civil rights gains, while proponents say it eases burdens on districts. Is it a step toward equality or a setback? School desegregation: Trump officials vow to end Civil Rights-era orders

Six decades after the federal government ordered Concordia Parish to desegregate its schools, the district remains racially divided. Black students make up more than 92% of Ferriday High School, while 15 minutes away, Vidalia High is 62% white. Yet state and local officials say it’s time to free Concordia Parish and other districts from court-ordered desegregation orders dating back decades. In a stunning shift that reverses decades of policy, they have allies in the federal government. The Trump administration has vowed to lift more desegregation plans from the 1960s. Civil rights activists say it would leave families with little recourse when they face discrimination.

Schoolkids in 8 states can now eat free school meals, advocates urge Congress for nationwide policy

When classes resume for kids in eight states, they won’t have to worry about where their next meals will be coming from because they’ll be free. Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado, Vermont, Michigan, and Massachusetts will make school breakfasts and lunches permanently free to all students starting this academic year, regardless of family income. They’re following in the footsteps of California and Maine. Several other states are considering similar steps. And congressional supporters want to extend free meals to all kids nationwide. Experts have long said students learn better when they are well nourished.

New Jersey to require free period products in schools for grades 6 through 12

New Jersey will require school districts to offer free menstrual products for grades six through 12 under a new law Gov. Phil Murphy has signed. Murphy, a Democrat, announced in a statement that he signed the bill Wednesday and said it was aimed at promoting equity “at every level” in the state. Under the bill, school districts are required ensure that students in schools with students from grade six through 12 have direct access to menstrual products in at least half of the female and gender-neutral bathrooms for free. The state will bear any costs incurred by schools under the legislation.
