I thoroughly enjoyed the talk by Ben Okri about his new book at @edbookfest on Friday night. It got a bit postponed because of travel problems, but it gave my friend and I time to start the 🍷before the talk... and still continue it after. He was also very friendly at the signing and his daughter a pearl. I'm also really enjoying his new book and The Famished Road... #howmanynovelsareyoureadingatonce!

I have found 3 streaming events I want to get tickets for to watch. Rosemary Goring talking about Mary Queen of Scots, Emily Wilson talking about translating Homer, and Val McDermid talking about her Queen Macbeth book. But overall the number of events I could choose from was way down on previous years. I have emailed the book festival my views. #bookstodon #books #bookFestivals #Edinburgh #EdinburghBookFestival #accessibility #streaming
On plus, having realised how few of the Edinburgh Book Festival events this year are offering streaming, I can very quickly go through the programme. No need to read all the event listings, looking for those I like. I can just look for the few with a livestream tag under them. Sheesh! #bookstodon #books #bookFestivals #Edinburgh #EdinburghBookFestival #accessibility #streaming
Finally going through the printed Edinburgh Book Festival Programme, and hugely disappointed by how few events this year are offering streaming paid tickets. I’ve enjoyed many of their talks remotely in recent years. This feels like a real step back, discriminating against people who can’t attend in person. #bookstodon #books #bookFestivals #Edinburgh #EdinburghBookFestival #accessibility #streaming

Book festival sponsor has major investments in fossil fuels

The book festival will this year host climate activists including Greta Thunberg, but its sponsor, Baillie Gifford, has significant investments in firms involved in the coal, oil and gas sectors.

The Edinburgh Book Festival, another Edinburgh festival tone-deaf to the needs of the city. It starts the week Scottish children go back to school and it takes money from a company profiting from carbon polluting industries. #EdinburghBookFestival #Edinburgh

Of course Greta Thunberg is right to call out greenwashing, but the reality can be messy

Her withdrawal from the Edinburgh book festival raises questions about how best to demand change, says Guardian columnist Charlotte Higgins

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has pulled out of a much-anticipated event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. She cited a sponsor's "heavy" investments in fossil fuel and accusing them of "greenwashing".
