I watched the movie, Eden, on Netflix yesterday. It was a dramatization of a sequence of events I'd never heard of before, three sets of Europeans colonize Floreana Island in the Galapagos, in the late 1930s. It went about how you'd expect: white people fucking each other over due to limited resources, narcissism and extreme entitlement.
However, one character, Dr. Ritter, was writing what sounded almost like an anti-civ manifesto. The line he said that is still with me this morning is as follows:
"Democracy, then fascism, then war."
The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh? Democracy is tyranny of the majority and in a capitalist patriarchy, the ones with the most power (i.e., money) are the ones that skew a democracy towards fascism. To me it seems inevitable and as problematic as Dr. Ritter was, I can't help but agree with him on this particular idea.
