I read about A Disease of Language in the introductory essay to the #ArthurMachen anthology I am reading, which I picked up because Moore refers to Machen's story N in his novel The Great When. So I feel like I've been ensnared in a Moore-Machen time loop.

Niklas stellt uns den Westerncomic Next Town Over vor, Christian hat seinen alten Vertigo-Kalender wiedergefunden. Niklas: 2024 endete Next Town Over, ein Weird Western-Webcomic von Ben Mehlos. Die Welt? Erfunden. Das Szenario? Angelehnt an den Wilden Westen, nur dass Magie und Steampunk-Technologie nebeneinander existieren. Die Hauptfiguren? John Henry Hunter und seine Jägerin, Vane Black. Black benutzt große Waffen und bastelt sich gerne aus mechanischen Einzelteilen (und ihrem armen Pferd Diamonds) bizarre Maschinen, mit denen sie versucht, ihrer Beute habhaft zu werden. Hunter dagegen verlässt sich auf sein gutes Aussehen, seinen flinken Verstand und seine schnellen Reflexe. Ach ja und er kann mit Feuerbällen um sich schmeißen. Das ist bestimmt auch nützlich. Über zwölf Hefte zieht sich ihre Fehde, in der Leser*innen nicht nur viel über die Hintergründe des Konflikts erfahren, sondern dabei zusehen, wie immer mehr Leichen den blutigen Pfad dieser zwei glorreichen Halunken pflastern. Am Ende machen sie sich nicht nur für eine Handvoll Dollar Feinde, sondern häufen genug Hass auf sich an, dass vielelicht Gott noch vergeben mag, aber ihre Feinde nie. Habe …

This is the graphic novel adapted from the screenplay & sticks pretty closely to the source, with some condensing & a slightly modified ending.
Illustrations are deliberately sparse (think #EddieCampbell with #AlanMoore on #FromHell) & it suits the tone. The writing captures the unhinged, hallucinogenic mood of the novel. & so, whilst this recommended, first read the novel. You’ll thank me.
