One of the drawbacks of being economically inactive is that you tend to lose touch with the calendar. I frequently don’t know what day it is. Went to go swimming this morning. Thought the traffic was light, and when I arrived there were no cars parked in the street. Turns out today is a holiday and the pool was closed. #EconomicallyInactive #DozyTwat

The Guardian view on ‘unretirement’: older workers could help with labour shortages https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/21/the-guardian-view-on-unretirement-older-workers-could-help-with-labour-shortages?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

My last employer wanted the wisdom of a 55yo with the energy of a 25yo. I left, exhausted, vowing never to work for a listed or ‘growth-centric’ business again. I’ve radically changed lifestyle. I’m healthier. I gain more fulfilment & contribute more value now through charity and campaign related work. I know I’m lucky, but please gov’t don’t patronise me.

The Guardian view on ‘unretirement’: older workers could help with labour shortages

Editorial: Ministers need to better target policies to encourage economically inactive 50- to 64-year-olds back to work

Labour is buying into the right-wing narrative around Universal Credit claimants - what's new?

This framing of the DWP and Universal Credit is disgusting - and shows that the party is a danger to those on benefits it's meant to help

We finally have proof: there’s no point working if you’re a mum

The question isn’t whether we can afford to invest in childcare; the question is whether we can afford not to

DWP is targeting Universal Credit claimants in yet another benefits crackdown

Sanctions, back-to-work schemes, and a ban on sick notes are on the DWP's agenda for Universal Credit claimants in new benefits crackdown

Dear journos, news editors & other media types,

Kindly stop referring to those like me who have chosen to stop working as #EconomicallyInactive — it’s a gross misrepresentation, and well you know it!

We are still spending, saving, investing & paying taxes. If anything, many of us are more economically active than ever we were when earning: we have to be, to manage our finances efficiently.

The correct term is #EconomicallyIndependent.

Thank you.

@bbcnews doing a wonderful job today showing the human stories of people who are providing millions of hours of #unpaidcare to disabled family and friends. These are my people, my tribe. We are amazingly strong and inventive, robust and sensitive, and could do well in any job with our experience. We are NOT to be reduced to being labelled '#EconomicallyInactive', because that is a lie - we save the system billions and allow others to have their careers - and insulting!
@SusanMichie yes both Liz Truss, Kwazi Kwartang & Jacob Reece Mogg all said over 8 million “Economically Inactive “ when pushing the ERG/IEA/55 Tufton Street “ Get Britain Moving “ message.
They know unemployment through long covid/carers of long covid/shielders mean unemployment high not low!
Just shifted figures into PIP/ESA/DLA/SSP/ Carers allowance/Early retirement.
#EconomicallyInactive they mean are:
#Pensioners
#LongTermSick
#ShortTermSick
#UnpaidCarers
