61. Agar that comes from seaweed is used in lab media for, among other things, plant tissue culture. At various times, agar has grown more scarce/expensive due to conditions (including climate change-induced rise in temperature in the marine environment). LBG might actually be helpful in some of this lab media, which would take some of the pressure off agar.

60. Currently and for some time now, there's been more money in producing carob seeds for locust bean gum (LBG) than in producing carob pulp for its own taste & sugars. Prior to the mid-20th c. another use of LBG (or as it was called then "Tragosol", a trade name) was as a sizing. Sizing something applied to bolts of fabric to keep them stiffer and freer of wrinkles before they're sewn into end-products.

I love tamarind sauce. OMG I love it.

Same plant family as carob.

We should have a plant spin on March Mammal Madness. It would really be hard to decide which plant family, genus, or species is most awesome. #EconomicBotany #Botany

My ride today took me past this, but it was already too hot for me to contemplate stopping to take a look. I only saw signs about it.

Glad someone shared photos of a cork harvesting at the Arboretum today. Davis has many Quercus suber trees on campus and in some areas of town.

@pvonhellermannn count me in 🙂 In my work as a garden designer, I'm really pushing for #wildlife habitat & #NativePlants to be integrated with #ForestGarden edible crops.

A brilliant related book is Kat Anderson’s Tending the Wild, she has introduced me to the existence of #ethnobiology and #EconomicBotany!
