Turning a blind eye to roads and dogs in koala conservation

In the early 1900s farmers, hunters and government officials opened the koala-hunting season. Now the extinction of the koala is driven by land clearing, sprawl, vehicle crashes, dog attacks and logging.

The framing of (koala) conservation stops where human habitat and their mobility design (roads to everywhere and speeding vehicles) fragments the habitat of the endangered wildlife. They haste from the remaining refuge island to to the next refuge island. If the speeding vehicles won't smear them across the road, they end up mauled by introduced roaming carnivores.

Logging reprieve for Tuckers Knob

"Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) has been ordered to temporarily cease operations within Tuckers Knob after Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty suspended logging pending a survey of the area."

"The suspension was prompted by Gleniffer residents alerting the Minister to legislation within the Plantation and Reafforestation Act 1999... I’d been knocked back by Forestry, and then at the 11th hour, I got a letter from the Department of Primary Industries saying they aren’t aware what’s in there, and they’ve agreed to suspend logging and undertake an evaluation.”

“In planning every plantation operation, Forestry Corporation is required to identify any unique and special wildlife values which may be present and assess whether the operations are likely to have an impact on these,” said an FCNSW spokesperson."

“The area is koala habitat,” said Dr Tim Cadman...This is all within the footprint of the Great Koala National Park. Tuckers Knob is critical to the survival of the lowland coastal koalas in this area, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a plantation or native forest in the context of the National Park. It’s koala habitat, and koalas don’t read maps.”

A gift to the developers and loggers - Missing data in the government data management system

Missing rescue data casts doubts on effectiveness of policies to protect wildlife in NSW

"Four years of wildlife rescue data is missing from the New South Wales government's species tracking database BioNet, (The gateway to NSW biodiversity information) casting doubt over the accuracy of protection plans and development approvals.'

"A group of leading wildlife organisations estimates about 400,000 records of rescues are missing, including about 28,000 threatened species rescues."

"Analysis of BioNet data shows in some local government areas, wildlife rescue data hasn't been entered since mid-2019, despite being reported annually by dozens of wildlife rescue groups across the state."

"The absence of that data is a gift to the developers and may well have allowed the destruction of important habitat."...
