Ended Wednesday and welcomed Thursday after a walk with The Following Morning an album by German double bassist and composer Eberhard Weber, recorded in August 1976 and released on ECM later that same year. Weber is backed by pianist Rainer Brüninghaus and members of the Oslo Philharmonic

Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:

The title of Eberhard Weber’s classic 1977 album is as evocative as they come. At once cryptic and expository, the image calls up a host of associations, plays of light and shadow.

...Weber’s compositions constitute a vast sonic kaleidoscope in which one finds a range of moods all strung by the same nostalgic threads. Every detail is a new feather, stitched into the wings on either side of the space-bound fuselage that is his ever-expanding oeuvre. To listen to his music is to feel the state of things change from light to dark and back to light again.

Free Action by Wolfgang Dauner , released on SABA in 1967.

Review by Ken Dryden

...This adventurous session of originals by the pianist includes violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Gerd Dudek, cellist Eberhard Weber, bassist Jürgen Karg, and two drummers, Mani Neumeier and Fred Braceful. Although Dauner is the leader, he treats himself as part of the ensemble and doesn't overly dominate the performances. The music alternates between accessible melodies reminiscent of Charles Mingus in spots, though there is often a quick transformation into much looser frameworks where chord structure and rhythm is quickly abandoned...

Yogi Jazz by Joki Freund Sextet, released on CBS in 1964.

(an) almost overlooked gem from the German jazz scene of the 60s. Joki Freund, the composer and multi-instrumentalist is one of its most dazzling figures and Yogi Jazz is without a doubt his masterpiece.
The influence of John and Alice Coltrane is clear throughout the album and the sextet, for which he gathered together a group of young European musicians who later would achieve great notoriety, reaches an outstanding “cool” and original quality of rare beauty. - Soundohm

The exotic disguise adds Neumeier on tabla, though Ponty's slashing violin is similar to his avant-garde leaning records as a leader during this period....

Wolfgang Dauner – Output (1970, Germany)

Our next spotlight is on number 1062 on The List, submitted by @soundclamp.

This album is like a 38-minute reset button. A 38-minute palate cleanser. A 38-minute-wide space for German pianist Wolfgang Dauner (later of United Jazz + Rock Ensemble et al.), American jazz drummer Fred Braceful (later of Nurse With Wound-listed band Exmagma et al.), and German bassist Eberhard Weber (later prolific solo and collaborative artist, especially with other ECM label artists and Kate Bush[1]) to experiment the heck out of some free jazz. A 38-minute pause to consider how one might shake hands with a voice.

As described on the ECM review blog Between Sound and Space, Output is “[n]ot an easy listen for the faint of heart, but one that will give back what’s put into it and, like the fully opened cover, gathers its power from another dimension.”

Enjoy, this is a great rabbit hole to go down.

  • Including both Kate Bush albums we have on The List, The Dreaming (Weber plays just on “Houdini”) and Aerial (which we haven’t spotlit yet; Weber plays throughout). ↩︎
