The city has over & over framed this struggle as: neighborhood residents with some supposedly-misguided concerns about arsenic vs. experts who say everything will be fine.

What this letter should make clear is that there's actually an expert consensus: adding diesel to East Phillips is dangerous.

Driving home from #minneapolis I saw an informative graffiti reminding me that we need to support our neighbors in the #EastPhillips neighborhood by being loud about the #Arsenic poisoning that will come from tearing down the #RoofDepot. There's been a pause thanks to the brave activists.

Minneapolis Roof Depot demolition halted for now

A Hennepin County judge ruled Friday that the City of Minneapolis may not move forward with a planned demolition next week of the empty Roof Depot site in the East Phillips neighborhood.

"During the February 19th-26th week of solidarity everywhere to Defend the Welaunee Forest and Stop Cop City, Minneapolis is also fighting a local and connected struggle against toxic harm in the southside East Phillips Neighborhood.

On Sunday February 19th, a joint Defend East Phillips – Stop Cop City rally was held at the Roof Depot site. Many of the 100+ attendees were from Little Earth, the USA’s largest Native-preference housing project, located one block to the north, and highlighted the active colonialism of an illegitimate government seizing already stolen land both in Welaunee and in Minneapolis to enact further harm on Native communities."

It's Going Down
I’m #Overwhelmed #outraged and #confused . #eastphillips has been fighting the City of Minneapolis for almost 10 years against a public works facility expansion that would increase health problems for its residents. After thousands of public comments asking the City to change location of the expansion, they have done NOTHING! They are forcing a facility into a community that doesn’t want it!

For those following along at home as the the air quality index in #Minneapolis's #EastPhillips dipped above 200 (last night; it's been above 150, meaning "keep infants, pregnant people, people with asthma and cardiovascular disease indoors," for days)...

This is a great post summarizing how #Minnesota's pollution control agency has time and time again broken its own rules to allow more #AirPollution in this largely Hispanic, Indigenous, and Black neighborhood.

No one is protecting East Phillips from air pollution, notably those who promised to do so

The air quality in #Minneapolis’s #EastPhillips has been worse than Beijing for the last 24 hours

The #AirPollution in Minneapolis’s #EastPhillips is so bad today that even the EPA—which basically everyone agrees has far too lax particulate pollution standards, compared w modern evidence abt health effects—says is so bad that “sensitive groups” will harm their health by going outside

“Sensitive groups”: infants, the elderly, people with cardiovascular disease or diabetes or asthma…

12% of E Phillips has asthma

But #Minneapolis wants to INCREASE pollution there w #HiawathaCampusExpansion

The City of Minneapolis wants the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute to pay an outrageous $4.5 million bond to delay the demolition of the Roof Depot site until after the Court of Appeals ruling on whether the city failed to comply with state law by not producing a cumulative environmental impact statement. 1/2
