Another #introduction, as our previous incarnation on EFDSS's trial folksocial.org migrated to BlueSky losing everything (OK, we'd only made a dozen posts). Our ancient annual #EastKent #folktradition of #hoodening involves visiting houses (mainly public houses, i.e. pubs!) the week before Christmas/Solstice with our #hoodenhorse, performing a short humorous play (written new each year) and a song or two (is #folkmusic right? it's often a parody of a recent pop song). Then we sing community carols and collect donations in our nosebag. For the last sixty years this has been for a local charity rather than ourselves. Everything you wanted to know about #hoodenhorses and #guising (and related #folkcustom or #folklore topics, e.g. #MariLwyd, #wassail) but never dared ask is - probably - contained in hoodening.org.uk, and the #OzaruBooks publications shown there. 🐴

For those in #EastKent searching a #wassail, there's one in #Sandwich on 4 Jan (with a #hoodening walk etc. before featuring Trudgepig): 14:00 St Crispin Inn, Worth; 15:00 Time & Tide Taproom; 16:00 Sandwich Medieval Centre. (https://www.facebook.com/events/885988743684265/)

Then another in #StNicholasAtWade on 11 Jan, 19:30 (https://www.facebook.com/events/348463171659419/)

Hoodening and Wassail

Event in Sandwich, United Kingdom by Sandwich Medieval Centre and Sonia Overall on Saturday, January 4 2025 with 124 people interested.

Our local #EastKent #MummersPlay was performed by the #BoydenGate #Mummers again this Boxing Day, followed by the #Wantsum #Morris men. A reasonable audience, with many ramblers and dogs as usual.
So this is #Solstice/#Xmas, and what have we done? The #Hoodening's over, we all had great fun… hopefully our audiences too, 13 performances around #Thanet in #EastKent, raising around £2000 for #SERVkent (Blood Runners). A new script as always, in rhyming couplets, but no new song this year. Topical references to NHS dentists, freebie clothing, Oasis, cost of living, explosive ships & rockets, Rwandagate, Wonkagate, Aurora Borealis, rural housing, dogging, army horses, and more… #HoodenHorse

We'd like to think you've heard of our Dobbin,
The Kent #hoodenhorse, who this week's out jobbin'
If local - which even includes some from Lon-don
Please do come along and share in the fun,
If not, you'll find plenty of stuff on the web
(and most other socials: Dobbin's a celeb!)

Night 3: #Reculver #Monkton #Broadstairs #Margate (all #EastKent - mostly #thanet )

Hoodening, Hoodeners and Hooden Horses

Hoodening, an old custom performed each December in Thanet, East Kent

Hoodening
First night of the #EastKent (#Thanet) #hoodening season: St Nick village hall 7.30ish, Tartar Frigate (#Broadstairs) 9.30ish. New horse (i.e. the two-legged bit)! Expect us to be as 'word perfick' as usual. ;-)
@david_castleton "was"? Many #mumming folk traditions continue, as does the vaguely-related #mummering in Newfoundland, not to forget our own #Hoodening of course in #EastKent (which didn't die out in 1910 as your article suggests - see for example the books by Frampton or Frost for more details). Tomorrow is actually our first day of the season...

A few weeks back @jillswan10 and I ran a carving day together, I started this spoon from a bent piece of Cherry.
It's got alternating facets and curves, that really blend well for the eye, much more pleasing in person than the photos, and sometimes life if just like that.

This glorious piece of Cherry makes me smile so very much, the last of three spoons from this one billet I had, all the rest of the log looks like Cherry I'm used to.
I wonder what's caused this billet to be so different, does anyone know?
