Another book source for a Ghibli film added to my shelf! (And reading backlog...)

I've also got the original books for Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Arrietty (The Borrowers), and When Marnie Was There. Howl's Moving Castle is the only Ghibli film based on a book where I read the book before seeing the movie.

We watched two #StudioGhibli movies last night. Earwig & the Witch was fine, glad I finally watched it.

The second movie we watched was The Red Turtle. This movie was beautiful, tragic, haunting, mesmerizing and I'm still struggling to form words to describe how I feel about it. I'm still thinking about it after a sleep, so that says something. It was difficult to watch at times and I literally sobbed twice during it.

There is no dialogue in the film and the music is used sparingly, which made it extremely effective in evoking the emotional waves of this film. The quiet sound effects makes you, the viewer, sit with the experience playing out on the screen in a way that just bubbles up inside you.

I just can't stop thinking about it. It's pushing and pulling its way around my head, revealing more of itself to me as I replay scenes in my mind. I love when a piece of art does that to me.

Watched Earwig and the Witch again, which is probably one of Studio Ghibli's most overlooked and forgotten films since it breaks so many of the studio's traditions, most notably by being a 3DCG film. I think I enjoyed it even more this time, and I liked it the first time I saw it too!

It feels like only half of a movie, though the source material may explain that, since the book was still an incomplete draft as Diana Wynne Jones passed away while writing it. So while the story may not be the strongest, for me the fact that Earwig herself is a sassy little firecracker makes the movie fun to watch. The Mandrake is also a great character.

Plus, the movie is an homage to British rock music of the late 1960s and 1970s, as evidenced by the unconventional score for a Ghibli film. I even caught a David Bowie reference this time! Earwig has a drawing by her bed in the orphanage with a character named "Star Man".

Anime: Earwig and the Witch (2021).

I watched #EarwigAndTheWitch again and liked it much more the second time around.

Knowing the approach that Goro Miyazaki took definitely helped.

I also see where @Scofisticated has concerns about Earwig's development, but I actually think the film is a clever twist on the norm. In most films, it's the kids that change while the parents remain static. This film turns the tables and has the parents developing instead.

Earwig and the Witch Review - The Animation Anomaly

Controversy, confusion, bemusement? Earwig and the Witch marks a bold departure for the famed Japanese studio.

The Animation Anomaly

Watched Earwig & The Witch and it's really good but far too short. It really needed another half hour to fully flesh out the characters. I was watching away at it and got ready for a full final act only to discover there was about 5 minutes left. A lot ever ended up coming together far too quick.
