Five Real Life Examples of #Solarpunk?

On this post, I wanted to share some potential real life examples of solarpunk to help get you inspired, and to show that these ideas are potentially possible in real life if we dare to dream big.

"Continuing with our Earth Month theme, I’m back to talk more about the genre/movement our world desperately needs—Solarpunk! A genre which depicts humanity, nature, and technology living in harmony. To learn more about the genre itself, check out my Solarpunk Worldbuilding Guide.

On this post, I wanted to share some potential real life examples of solarpunk to help get you inspired, and to show that these ideas are potentially possible in real life if we dare to dream big. However, let there be emphasis on the word potential and the fact that I used a question mark in the title.

Caveat: By sharing these examples, I’m not claiming they are 100% representative of solarpunk values. Indeed we still live in a world dominated by late stage capitalism, so there are most likely flaws in these examples, as they are part of an inherently flawed system. Yet I still decided to share these because they are an example of attempts to go in a solarpunk direction.

I’m also not claiming these are the only examples. If you can think of some better ones, please let me know in the comments."

"Earthships are cutting edge 'green' buildings, constructed using waste car tyres and other recycled materials. They use the planets natural systems to provide all utilities - using the sun's energy and rain to provide heat, power and water."

Hey  community!

Just joined this instance (and the fediverse) and here's my intro: Once a mechanical engineer, now an IT guy. At night a cyberpunk trying to #unplugtrump and working on a better world with open systems and sustainable solutions. I am in my 40s, husband, father of one and an EU citizen from Germany.

Looking forward to exchange with like-minded indiviuals.

Cheers!

"New Mexico’s ‘Earthships’ offer unique model for living off the grid"

The honeymoon of my ex-wife and me was in New Mexico.

Guess what?

We stayed in a couple of Earthships. It was nice.

New Mexico's 'Earthships' offer unique model for living off the grid

This summer's extreme heat and the demand for air conditioning are putting a big strain on the electricity grid in many parts of the nation. But for more than 40 years, a pioneering architect in New Mexico has been building a unique kind of home that can be heated and cooled without using any electricity at all. Special Correspondent Megan Thompson reports.

PBS News

We recently had the chance to spend a full day in Taos, New Mexico. During our visit we first toured the 1,000+ year old Taos Pueblo in the morning. Later in the day we toured the still developing Earthship Biotecture community located approximately 14 miles west of town. It was a fascinating comparison between two surprisingly similar philosophies of conservation, sustainability, and the protection nature. In fact, their belief systems would be good foundation to start form for those communities that are facing the daunting realities of climate change. Here are the similarities noted (others may apply, as well):

  • Both communities employ(ed) soil from the Earth to create their structures through thick walls of abode bricks for the pueblo to rammed-earth tires and recycled beer can bricks in the earthships. These designs keep the interior cool in the High Desert heat of summer and holds the warmth in during the chilly days of winter.
  • Both believe in minimizing their individual and collective impacts on the planet – the pueblo through use of natural construction materials and the earthship community by utilizing natural materials that are blended with the recycling and reuse of garbage such as bottles, cans, tires, etc.
  • Much of their food is locally grown and prepared within the two communities.
  • Both communities encourage and practice sustainability on a daily basis.
  • The care, conservation, protection, and reuse of precious water resources is observable in both communities.
  • Neither community over consumes goods and services, but instead employs minimalistic ethics.
  • Xeriscaping that is consistent with the natural surroundings is employed within both communities.
  • These beliefs and traditions are being handed down to future generations to assure the continuance of the community and its eco-friendly practices.

Images from these two remarkable communities are provided below. Peace!
