Earl Browder (1891-1973) was general secretary of the CPUSA (Communist Party of the USA) from 1930 until 1945.

"The man from Kansas" was a dedicated labor and political activist and the creator of an innovative political strategy for the US left. He was also a spy for the Soviet Union.

He appeals to me as a complex, problematic, and possibly tragic figure in a way that William Foster simply does not.
