테드 창의 단편 소설 "네 인생의 이야기"에서는 주인공 루이즈가 아직 태어나지도 않은 미래의 딸이 결국 죽게 될 사실을 알면서도 그 운명을 실현하기 위해 사랑을 하고, 결혼을 해서 아이를 낳는다.

이 소설의 내용은 내가 평소 생각했던 운명론과도 비슷한데, 나 역시 사람은 한 번 자신의 운명을 알게 되는 순간, 시간을 보는 관점이 바뀌면서 그 운명을 받아들일지 말지를 고민하는 대신 어떻게 해야 그 운명을 실현시킬 수 있는지에 관심을 두게 될 거라고 생각한다.

다시 말해 한 번 미래를 알게 되면, 그 미래를 벗어날 길이 없어진다는 의미다. 남은 건 그저 실현 과정을 알아가는 일 뿐.

단편 애니 엑소디움(Exordium)은 많은 부분을 관객의 추측에 맡기지만, 나는 이 작품이 "네 인생의 이야기"와 비슷한 주제를 이야기한다고 생각한다. 주인공은 수많은 희생을 치른 끝에 게이트키퍼를 쓰러뜨리고 블룸을 얻지만, 그 순간 주인공은 자신의 미래(신적 존재가 되어 먼 훗날 살해당함)를 보게 되면서 운명에 사로잡힌다.

결국 주인공은 블룸을 고향으로 가져가는 대신 그 힘이 세상에 퍼지지 않도록 또다른 게이트키퍼가 된다. 운명의 순간이 올 때까지 블룸의 힘이 악용되지 않도록, 그리고 자신처럼 미래의 노예가 될 자가 더는 나오지 않도록 말이다. 그래야 운명이 깔끔하게 실현되니까.

주인공 손에 쓰러진 게이트키퍼 분명 이 미래를 보았고, (설득이 실패할 것을 알았겠지만) "블룸은 그저 비탄일 뿐이다"라고 경고했을 것이다. 그렇게 운명의 굴레는 이어진다.

By the Alchemy, I (mostly) stopped playing for two months and completely forgot how gorgeous Exordium (one of the legendary greatswords) is! Also, the blue bladed back piece and hair... the whole game is beautiful!
