LA NOTIZIA: “Sospendere l’accordo di associazione tra Unione europea e Israele”, l’appello degli esperti dell’Onu a Bruxelles
Davanti alla campagna militare con cui Benjamin Netanyahu ha infiammato l’intero Medio Oriente, molti chiedono all’Unione europea di prendere le distanze da Israele. Così, dopo raccolte firme e manifestazioni, a ribadire questa richiesta sono venti esperti delle Nazioni Unite, che hanno invitato Bruxelles a “sospendere immediatamente l’accordo di associazione Ue-Israele, che dal 2000 garantisce a Israele un accesso preferenziale al mercato europeo, nonostante le ben documentate violazioni dei diritti umani, degenerate in crimini atroci, tra cui il genocidio”.
Un duro atto d’accusa in cui si sottolinea che “l’Europa si trova di fronte a un chiaro test morale, quando i suoi ministri degli Esteri si riuniranno il 21 aprile in Lussemburgo per valutare la sospensione, totale o parziale, di questo accordo”. E ancora: “Questo incontro si svolge in un contesto di crescente richiesta di trasparenza e responsabilità da parte dell’opinione pubblica europea”.

Nel comunicato stampa, gli esperti hanno poi citato “l’Iniziativa dei cittadini europei” per la sospensione dell’accordo, che “ha raccolto finora oltre un milione di firme” e che non può essere ignorata. Gli stessi esperti delle Nazioni Unite fanno notare anche una certa ipocrisia da parte delle élite politiche del continente, in quanto “l’Ue non può credibilmente affermare di difendere i diritti umani mantenendo al contempo un accesso preferenziale al commercio con uno Stato la cui condotta è stata giudicata da numerosi organismi internazionali come equivalente a genocidio, crimini contro l’umanità e crimini di guerra”.
Così, concludono, “alla luce della gravità e della portata delle violazioni dei diritti umani documentate, la sospensione totale non è una questione di discrezionalità politica, ma un imperativo giuridico che incombe sull’Unione europea e rappresenta la misura minima necessaria per allineare le sue azioni agli obblighi previsti dal diritto internazionale”.

In the press release, the experts then cited the “European Citizens’ Initiative” for the suspension of the agreement, which “has so far collected over one million signatures” and cannot be ignored. The same UN experts also point out a certain hypocrisy on the part of the continent’s political elites, as “the EU cannot credibly claim to defend human rights while simultaneously maintaining preferential access to trade with a state whose conduct has been judged by numerous international organizations as equivalent to genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.”
Thus, they conclude, “in light of the gravity and scope of the documented human rights violations, the total suspension is not a matter of political discretion, but a legal imperative that falls on the European Union and represents the minimum necessary measure to align its actions with the obligations provided for in international law.”
