A Great Day in Harlem or Harlem 1958 is a black-and-white photograph of 57 jazz musicians in Harlem, New York, taken by freelance photographer Art Kane for Esquire magazine on August 12, 1958. The idea for the photo came from Esquire's art director, Robert Benton, rather than Kane. However, after being given the commission, it seems that Kane was responsible for choosing the location for the shoot. The subjects are shown at 17 East 126th Street,[a] between Fifth and Madison Avenue, where police had temporarily blocked off traffic. Published as the centerfold of the January 1959 ("Golden Age of Jazz") issue of Esquire,[4] the image was captured with a Hasselblad camera, and earned Kane his first Art Directors Club of New York gold medal for photography. It has been called "the most iconic photograph in jazz history," - Wikipedia

Whoa, Gen Z Guys, Are You Okay?

A recent global survey showed that Gen Z males have more traditional—some might say backward—views on how to treat women than millennials, Gen X, and boomers. Is this what happens when a generation is raised on podcasts?

“James Van Der Beek had a grand idea for the revival of Dawson’s Creek before he died,” reveals the series creator, Kevin Williamson.

Following the death of “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek, who died on February 11th at 48 after three years of battling colon-rectal cancer, creator Kevin Williamson has revealed a project the actor wanted: “James and I spoke about a reboot of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ several times – Kevin told Esquire in an interview published on March 2nd –. He wanted to do it. And indeed, there was a moment when he was about to write it, and he had a truly ambitious idea.”

Indeed, while “Dawson’s Creek,” which also featured Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson, concluded in 2003 with a five-year time jump to give the audience a conclusion, the screenwriter emphasized that “This Is Us” inspired James’ idea of a return to Capeside.

“He had a wonderful plan – Kevin explained –. Then everyone got busy. It never happened that the project was realized, but it was talked about a lot.”

It was only James’ idea that convinced the screenwriter to consider a return to the iconic teen drama: “I’ve always been reluctant. I always thought, ‘Well, we did it. We finished it.’ The ending of the series seemed like a remake. I feel very comfortable with this. I don’t feel the need to return to that world, even though I loved it and I would really like to.”

Tom Junod Finally Reckons with What It Means to Be a Man

In a long list of classic stories, the legendary magazine writer helped teach readers what masculinity looks like in the 21st century. To write his first book, he had to confront the man who first taught him: his father.
