This publication presents a summary of the main findings of the 2019 ESENER survey, revealing the risk factors that workplaces are most concerned about, the level of employee involvement in measures to address these issues and the reasons why workplaces are or are not managing safety and health. For the first time, the results show how the situation has changed compared to the previous survey in 2014 and include a section on the emerging issue of digitalisation.

ESENER workshop draws focus to safety and health in Europeβs education sector | Safety and health at work EU-OSHA

Accommodation and food service activities - Evidence from the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER) | Safety and health at work EU-OSHA
The number of occupational safety and health (OSH) hazards in the fast-paced hospitality sector is almost endless. Among others, these include ergonomic risks, temperature and air pollutants, slips/trips/falls, dangerous substances and safety risks, as well as psychosocial risks, including continuous contact with customers and high workload and time pressure to meet tight deadlines at peak times. This EU-OSHA report highlights sector-specific measures to improve risk management, including employee participation, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Managing OSH in the accommodation and food service sectors | Safety and health at work EU-OSHA
Accommodation and food service activities are essential sectors for the economy of the EU, with 98% of these companies being family-run micro-enterprises. Occupational safety and health (OSH) risks in the sector are abundant: from repetitive hand or arm movements, slips, trips and falls, and risks of accidents with machines to psychosocial risks associated with dealing with customers and tight deadlines. Regular risk assessments in this sector are carried out slightly below the EU average but the figures are very diverse among Member States.
A major share of educational establishments across πͺπΊ countries are unaware of #OSH risks recognised as common to the sector, a recent #ESENER survey shows.
π
On 26 April, we will present the survey's main findings in an online workshop.

This Discussion Paper contributes to the current discourse on the role of prevention services in supporting substantive compliance with occupational safety and health (OSH) standards. It reviews the role of OSH professional practice in EU workplaces in the 21st century. This is done in relation to the wider discourse on the role of professional help in achieving substantive compliance, thus helping to also identify the limits of current knowledge and the key questions for future policy and research.
