Scientists See More Vegetation In The Himalayas - But It Is Not Good News, Because That Extra “Green” Can Disrupt Water, Snow, And High-Mountain Biodiversity | Plants Growing Higher Across Himalaya As Climate Warms

“For years, the biggest climate warning from the Himalaya was easy to picture because glaciers were shrinking on the roof of Asia. Now, researchers are pointing to a quieter signal, one that can look almost harmless from a distance. The mountains are getting greener.
New research [link above] shows alpine vegetation moving higher across six Himalayan regions from 1999 to 2022, pushed in part by warming and reduced snow depth. That might sound like nature recovering, but in this fragile landscape, more plant cover at extreme heights may change how snow is stored, how water runs downhill, and how rivers behave for communities far below…”

Daily Surface Air Temperature

This page provides time series and map visualizations of daily mean surface air temperature (2-meter height) estimates from the #ECMWF Reanalysis version 5 (#ERA5) for the period January 1940 to present (see ERA5 attribution below). ERA5 is a state-of-the-art numerical #climate / #weather modeling framework that ingests surface, radiosonde, and satellite observations to estimate the state of the atmosphere through time. The visualizations on this page enable users to explore weather-driven temperature changes within specific years, while also having several decades of daily data for broader climate context. Users are encouraged to learn more about reanalysis — approach, strengths, limitations, and product comparisons — from the NCAR Climate Data Guide. Additional information about reanalysis can be found at Advancing Reanalysis.

Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) @ECMWF emphasises how the global average temperature exceeded 1.5°C over a three-year period (2023–2025) – the first time in the #ERA5 record – bringing us closer to the Paris Agreement threshold.

So. This is a nice visualisation tool to play with! Both #ERA5 and @esaclimate.bsky.social datasets visualised for the whole world in a beautiful interface. It would be fantastic to see it updated for the last 10 years. #SciViz www.lexcube.org

Question: Is anyone here familiar with the #ERA5 dataset used for the climate data at #OpenMeteo ?

I intend to use it for the local elections for my local #Green Party chapter, by visualizing local climatic changes. And I need to be ready for arguments on the lines of:

"This data is interpolated, therefore not real and thus can be dismissed!"

Thus, if there are any good, accessible explanations that summarize how the dataset was created, I would appreciate it. Bonus points if they are in German!
