Wrap-Up of the session "Bringing Open Science into action: The role of educating young researchers" at the EOSC Symposium 2024

This report summarizes the session “Bringing Open Science into action: The role of educating young researchers" at the EOSC Symposium 2024 (21-23 October 2024, Berlin, Germany). The focus here is on analyzing the answers to 6 key questions from a poll and subsequent discussions with the participants.

Colleagues from GÉANT and over 15 #NRENs took part in the #EOSCsymposium2024 last week in Berlin, many contributing as speakers or session leads.

Alongside the successful launch of the #EOSC #EUnode, the Symposium offered plenty of sessions to discuss present and future of EOSC.

The October 2024 EOSC Symposium welcomed 450 in-person participants to network, exchange ideas, and discuss both present and future of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Colleagues from GÉANT and over 15 NRENs took part in the event, many contributing as speakers or session leads. If you were walking across Berlin’s Alexanderplatz last week, chances

➡️ Earlier this week #NFDI colleagues attended the #EOSCsymposium2024 in Berlin. We had a chance to learn more about the EU-level open science infrastructure and services and discuss the common challenges faced on international & domain-specific level.

👥 We were also there with colleagues from #Base4NFDI and the #KGI4NFDI service which includes #NFDI4Culture participation via @tibosl @lozross

The NFDI Knowledge Graph Infrastructure service for FAIR data management

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are data management technologies consisting of terminologies (vocabularies and ontologies) along with interconnected data entities, based on semantic web standards like RDF and SPARQL. KGs are powerful tools for the application of the FAIR data principles in and across research domains, and thereby supporting the mission of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. Developing KG solutions as part of the data management strategies is seen as an important step towards FAIR(er) data by a range of consortia. The NFDI Association includes subject-specific consortia, responsible for delivering research data resources and services to their respective communities, with cross-cutting sections forming Working Groups to tackle cross-domain issues. Additionally, the Base4NFDI consortium provides services deemed to be broadly applicable to all domains.  Besides the development of technical solutions, achieving interoperability requires a high degree of social coordination that can bridge disciplinary silos. The Working Group "Knowledge Graphs" provides such coordination by including members representing consortia across the spectrum of the natural and life sciences, engineering, humanities and social science domains. The WG also led the development of the Knowledge Graph Infrastructure (KGI4NFDI) Base service proposal. This new service will provide guidance, documentation, and software for creating and reusing KGs, alongside a registry of all KGs in use by NFDI consortia. Moreover, the service will develop an interoperability strategy, conduct surveys, and demonstrate the application of KGs across various research fields and scenarios using diverse methods. All solutions generated will be available under open-source and open-content licenses for broader benefit. This presentation will outline concrete goals, methods and intended outcomes of KGI4NFDI during its initiation phase in 2024-2025. We would like to use this opportunity to gather  feedback and explore the potential for collaboration and integration of the KGI service framework within the EOSC community.

Busy start of the week with the #EOSCsymposium2024 in Berlin and participation from various #NFDI colleagues. Learning more about the EU-level open science infrastructure and services planning was insightful and revealing in terms of how common challenges are faced on international / domain-specific level. Paths towards meaningful federation are becoming tangible.

@tibosl & @tibhannover were also represented with our involvement in #Base4NFDI and the #KGI4NFDI service.

now on my way back from berlin to cologne after a busy #eoscsymposium2024 . while it was a great event and very informative on the general strategic level, i think some more "hands-on" sessions would have been nice as well. was hoping to be able to follow some of #nfdixeosc #eoscxnfdi from afar, but despite the fact that most @NFDI 's are on mastodon, there's close to no tooting about the event :-(
It's hard to believe how quickly the 3 days of the #EOSCsymposium2024 have flown by.
Many thanks to the organizers for their great work. Many thanks also to our colleagues who made it possible for @helmholtz_hmc to represent HMC in person at the symposium. In addition to the lightning talk by our colleague Constanze Curdt yesterday, our poster, which was created together with @nfdi4energy was also very well received and provided an excellent basis for some interesting discussions.
The #EOSCsymposium2024 has ended, but I spontaneously joined the @NFDI x EOSC event. I'm curious about the lightning talks coming up.

The next EOSC Symposium will be in Brussels, Belgium in Autumn 2025.

The EOSC Symposium is also being accompanied by the EOSCxNFDI event, which focuses on synergies. The event will focus on exploring how the initiatives can jointly create added value for achieving an effective international research data management.

We are delighted that our #HMC colleague Constanze Curdt was invited to give a lightning talk today as part of the last thematic session of the #EOSCsymposium2024 😊 👏
