Imaggeo On Monday: the EGU Photo Competition – 3 DAYS LEFT!

We are so excited for your images to show us other ways of experiencing this wonderful planet and our place in the wider dance of our solar system, in the EGU24 Photo Competition just like one of our first ever winners, Christian Klepp did with this gorgeous image ‘Patterns in the Void’ in 2010. Remember your image can be of anything, even a gif or a video, and can have been captured at any time – not just in the last year. You only have 3 days left to submit your images, so head on over to the imaggeo page today!   Rocky mountains in Waterton Glacier reflect in the calm waters of a glacial lake. Milky Way center is located just above the horizon. Total darkness at new moon makes many stars visible. Additional information: www.lichtjahre.eu Description by Christian Klepp   In 2010 EGU held our first annual Photo Competition at the General Assembly in Vienna. Since then hundreds of photos have been shared on imaggeo by geoscientists and researchers just like you, with a lucky few being selected each year to be highlighted during the meeting and voted on by our members.   These images can be of anything to do with geology or geoscience – we get many beautiful landscape images, but you can also upload laboratory images, fieldwork images, hand samples or microscope images; even videos! The winners are awarded a free registration to the EGU General Assembly the following year and you can share an image taken at any time – they don’t have to be just from the last year – we even accept historical images, as long as you have the rights to share them! For more information visit the EGU24 Photo Competition announcement page.   Imaggeo  is the EGU’s online open access geosciences image repository. All geoscientists (and others) can  submit  their photographs and videos to this repository and, since it is open access, these images can be used for free by scientists for their presentations or publications, by educators and the general public, and some images can even be used freely for commercial purposes. Photographers also retain full rights of use, as Imaggeo images are licensed and distributed by the EGU under a  Creative Commons licence . Submit your photos at  http://imaggeo.egu.eu/upload/ .

Abstract EGU23-8226

When a photo tells a story, not by what you see, but by what is missing. This week's #imaggeoOnMondays didn't quite make the top 10 of the #EGU23 Photo Competition, but Petronela Ševčíková's image still tells a dramatic story of #glacier loss.

Imaggeo On Monday: Vanished glaciers of the past

No glaciers remained in the High Tatras since the last glaciation, but beautiful glacially carved landscapes and a multitude of small glacial lakes. This one, Zamrznuté pleso (2045 a.s.l.) is at one of the beautiful hike trails in the eastern part of the Tatras, the path through Poľský hrebeň and to the summit Východná Vysoká (2429 a.s.l.).   Photo and caption by Petronela Ševčíková, shared on imaggeo.egu.eu.   Imaggeo  is the EGU’s online open access geosciences image repository.
