Ended Thursday and welcomed Friday my 57th birthday with Llyrìa an album by Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch's band Ronin recorded in France in 2010 and released on the ECM label.

In taking the art of jazz to such internal heights, the Swiss pianist and band mates Sha (reeds), Björn Meyer (bass), Kaspar Rast (drums), and Andi Pupato (percussion) autopsy the body of the score and turn it into a netted form of improvisation: with each element carefully measured and weighed, one cell osmoses into the next. Thus are Bärtsch’s numbered “Moduls” nurtured through understated rhythms and potent denouements. Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler had been writing for jazz orchestra for three decades before this recording, criminally the only of its kind widely available at the time, was released. With a cast list (mostly veterans of the London jazz scene) to make one swoon, ECM’s first release of the 1990s raised the bar on production, arrangement, composition, and musicianship that had been the label’s prime tenets since its inception in 1969.
It’s easy to praise Wheeler as player, but on Music For Large & Small Ensembles we are given a smorgasbord of his delectable talents as composer. This massive two-disc set begins with The Sweet Time Suite in eight parts...

Trumpeter Ralph Alessi, with whom Weber has the longest association of those gathered, is a free and democratic spirit. Bassist Linda May Han Oh, here making her ECM debut, is a deeply grounded soul. And drummer Nasheet Waits, whom Weber had already admired and was suggested by producer Manfred Eicher, is a detailer of the highest order. Nach 7 Alben mit ECM ist er für seine aktuelle Scheibe „SPIN“ wieder zu seinem eigenen Label #RoninRhythmRecords zurückgekehrt.
Und damit landet sein polyrhythmischer #ZenFunk dann auch (wieder) auf #Bandcamp. Nebenbei bemerkt in 24bit/96khz, für die mit vielen Audio, erm für die Audiophilen.
