Il Tempo: Egpa, Durante (Apacs): "Terapie aiutano, lavorare su presa in carico"
Roma, 20 mag. (Adnkronos Salute) - L'Egpa, granulomatosi eosinofila con poliangioite, "è una patologia rara e multisistemica che presenta diversi sintomi che influenzano la vita quotidiana dei pazienti soprattutto nella fase critica, ma anche in quella di mantenimento. Le terapie influiscono sul modo in cui i pazienti affrontano il loro percorso, ma lo fanno anche a livello mentale, poiché la diagnosi di una malattia rara può essere molto impattante sulla quotidianità di un paziente, ma anche su quella di caregiver, familiari e amici: ecco perché bisogna lavorare sulla presa in carico, ma anche su un percorso che permetta a queste persone di avere un atteggiamento positivo e di trovare soluzioni ideali per convivere con una patologia cronica". Lo ha detto Eugenia Durante, vice presidente di Apacs - Associazione dei pazienti con sindrome di Churg-Strauss, oggi a Milano all'incontro con la stampa in occasione del via libera, da parte di Aifa - Agenzia italiana del farmaco, dell'estensione di indicazione di benralizumab, 'anticorpo monoclonale in grado di agire sul recettore dell'interleuchina 5.
"I sintomi iniziali di Egpa sono molto simili a patologie comuni come l'asma cronica - spiega Durante - per questo la diagnosi può impiegare anni e comportare una frustrazione eccessiva sul paziente, che finisce col ritrovarsi smarrito, anche perché fatica a confrontarsi con persone nella sua stessa situazione, essendo una patologia rara. Per questo le associazioni sono utili: permettono di creare un network e di intercettare i bisogni dei pazienti in tutte le fasi della malattia, dalla diagnosi alla presa in carico, fino al mantenimento".
Fino a qualche anno fa "le terapie di Egpa erano molto limitate e riguardavano principalmente farmaci tipo steroidei e immunosoppressori - evidenzia Durante - L'arrivo di nuove opzioni terapeutiche biologiche, come benralizumab, ha cambiato notevolmente la vita dei pazienti e anche l'aspettativa di vita, così come il modo di affrontare la malattia nel quotidiano. Questo è importante tanto a livello terapeutico quanto a livello psicologico. Speriamo che nel futuro la ricerca prosegua e continui a proporre sempre nuove alternative ai pazienti".

Therapies influence the way patients approach their journey, but they also affect them at a mental level, as the diagnosis of a rare disease can be very impactful on a patient’s daily life, as well as that of caregivers, family members and friends: that’s why it’s important to work on patient management, but also on a pathway that allows these people to have a positive attitude and find ideal solutions for living with a chronic pathology.” This was said by Eugenia Durante, Vice President of Apacs - Association of Patients with Churg-Strauss Syndrome, today in Milan at the meeting with the press on the occasion of the approval by Aifa - Italian Medicines Agency, of the extension of indication for benralizumab, ‘monoclonal antibody capable of acting on the interleukin 5 receptor.’
“The initial symptoms of EGPA are very similar to common pathologies such as chronic asthma – explains Durante – for this reason the diagnosis can take years and lead to excessive frustration for the patient, who ends up feeling lost, also because he struggles to relate to people in his same situation, being a rare pathology. That’s why associations are useful: they allow you to create a network and intercept the needs of patients in all phases of the disease, from diagnosis to management, to maintenance.”
“Until a few years ago ‘EGPA therapies were very limited and mainly involved steroid and immunosuppressant drugs’ – highlights Durante – The arrival of new biological therapeutic options, such as benralizumab, has significantly changed patients’ lives and also life expectancy, as well as the way the disease is faced in daily life. This is important both therapeutically and psychologically. We hope that in the future research continues and continues to propose new alternatives to patients.”
