Busy flying day up at #DunstableDowns
The Kensworth Chalk Quarry, near the village of Kensworth, Bedfordshire, England. August 2024. This 131-hectare site is an active quarry whose products are used to make cement (which is 75% chalk). Every day it pumps approx 4000 cubic-meters of chalk slurry along almost 100km pipeline to a cement factory near Rugby, Warwickshire. The prediction is that the quarry will be exhausted by the year 2038 after 75 years of extraction. This is part of the eastern edges of the Chiltern hills. The quarry is already partly returned to nature and is a Site Of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
