#DunsPlayers are reading a script on Friday evening to see if we fancy doing the farcical play Black Comedy in the autumn. Open to all to join in or just listen.

This is the logo of #DunsPlayfest an annual festival of #Theatre focused #NewWriting held at the beginning of May in the #Berwickshire town of #Duns in the #ScottishBorders. Established in 2019 by the #CommunityTheatre group #DunsPlayers but now attracting professional, student and other amateur companies and performers, including #Dance #LiveMusic and #Poetry as well as #Theatre from #Berwick #Northumberland #Edinburgh and beyond. New works premiered at our festival have gone on to be toured elsewhere including #EdinburghFringe.

Looking forward to tomorrow for the first reading of two brand new plays that Duns Players hope to perform at Duns Playfest in May. One is a Wilson's tale, the other a local reworking of Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milkwood'.

COMING UP | Duns Players

Duns Players
One thing that the article missed is that Duns Playfest has already seen a number of productions that opened at the festival go on to be more widely seen. For instance last year #DunsPlayers took 'Colonel Anne' (staged as a rehearsed reading at the first Playfest) to Edinburgh Fringe getting 85% audiences on an 8 night run.

‘Country: Scotland – Whit Like Is It?’ is playing at:
Eastgate Theatre, #Peebles (Thur 25 Jan)
Wauchope Hall, #Yetholm (Thur 1 Feb),
Hippodrome, #Eyemouth (Thurs 8 Feb)
The Eildon Centre, #Coldstream (Thurs 15 Feb).

The tour opened at the Heart of Hawick last week: Members of the audience said:
“An extraordinary show: dazzling, challenging, thought-provoking, funny and moving.”
“If you like Scotland, you will love this show”.

Scotland – Whit Like?

What is Scotland really like: touring the Borders, John McEwen leads a romp through Scotland's history and literature, from its ancient tribes to present-day politics. But it’s not just the script, the acting makes the show a must-see. McEwen peoples his one-man stage with an array of fascinating and funny characters, each with their own tale to tell and their own take on the nature of our nation.

So after #DunsPlayers storming success of One Man Two Governors three weeks ago, this week it is DunsOperatic's Panto 'Sword in the Stone' which I am helping backstage. They've done a brilliant job creating a magical set which is very swift to change between scenes. The dress rehearsal was definitely a laugh! Opens tomorrow, last show being Saturday matinee.

Well this time last week, I was derigging the set and stage for our production of "One Man Two Governors'. Had great fun playing (apparently successfully) a bloke 30 years younger. A theatre critic (admittedly a friend of the director) wrote a very positive review of the show. That Duns (population under 3000) supports two distinct theatre groups staging high quality shows several times a year is remarkable. A great reason to be in the #Scottish Borders #Duns #CommunityTheatre #DunsPlayers
