been several months now since i gave Tower her 3rd-boot, being her first atomic/immutable,  Kinoite, to supplement her 1st-boot   , & her 2nd-boot  SparkyLinux. have been using Kinoite daily. am now conflicted...

  • really pleasant to use, a great UX ๐Ÿ‘
  • really wish it was not merkan ๐Ÿ‘Ž

imo, i hope hope hope that project banana, aka, KDE-Linux   reaches Beta asap, at which point i might well replace Kinoite with it... not only, but bigly part of my desire, to eliminate as much merkanism from my pc as possible, such is my abhorrence & disgust with that failing fascist state of murder, invasion, violence, & skyfairydelusionism.

@unfa i abandoned it mid-last year. the two things it had going for it [one actual, one promised], they later abandoned ( #webpanels , #treestyletabs). its terrible random habit of losing all tabs on restart [peeps complaining for well over a year of it], & then the Dev's initially just idiosyncratic UI design concept warping into simply silly, then entirely killed it for me.

quite tickled today to have finally stumbled over the #TreeStyleTab "settings within the settings" view, in which at last i've been able to greatly narrow the Pinned Tabs' width, to fit many more into a single row.

#sidebery's had this option plainly available in its settings for yonks, & i always felt it weird for #TST to lack that similar granularity. no more need i ponder, the fault was mine, for not burrowing deep enough.

@tipjip there is a way, but it's very conditional on:

  • exactly how they use their pc [eg, just emails & browsing, or masses of proprietary windoze apps]?
  • your own willingness to dive into some one-off intense work

Here i'll not bother you with details of how i did stuff, just a list of what i did, coz you might have no interest, so just as a big picture fyi:

  • for a year i was preparing dad [88 y/o] conceptually for the need to change
  • he kept putting it off, unwilling to think about it
  • finally with the #EndOf10 Oct cut-off imminent, he began to relent, but it was clear to me he held some completely irrational fear of changing, & was feeling miserable about it all
  • "our" plan had been to reformat his SSD to either Fedora KDE or Mint [possibly LMDE], then create a VirtualBox VM for an unauthenticated win10 install that had NO internet access, for his fav greetings card & other arcane proprietary windoze apps
  • mere days from our agreed date, when i became fully aware of how very miserable & afraid he had made himself about this, i conceived a complete flip of the project
  • we would retain the awful win10 as his "real" OS [yuck], but i would forcibly remove all extraneous win apps he never used, then use the win10 firewall to prohibit ALL remaining programs & processes from touching the net
  • i created a VirtualBox Mint VM, which via said win10 firewall i did allow net access
  • Mint VM ran Firefox & Thunderbird, for all his email & browsing needs
  • all his other daily stuff continued to work for him in the odious win10, eg, office 2013, solitaire, greeting cards creation pgm, various other crap... all of which had no internet access
  • he was as happy as larry, but then certain issues arose...
  • VirtualBox proved to be extremely unreliable, causing many freezes of the VM, & very high RAM usage otherwise [one time then freezing win10 itself, & corrupting a TB file i later needed to fix]
  • looking for a way to retain the overall project objective, but eliminate VB, i discovered, enabled & setup a native win10 Hyper-V VM [again, allowing it net access via the FW], in which i created a new Mint VM. overall RAM use dropped, & momentarily this looked like a viable solution... til i realised it is not possible to share clipboard nor folders from Host to Linux VM, rendering it entirely useless. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ
  • then, i discovered [mere days ago] WLS, win10's native Windows Linux Subsystem, set it up [again, allowing it net access via the FW], created a Fedora CLI, via which i installed Fedora's FF & TB, which run "natively" direct from the ordinary win10 start menu. full folder & clipboard interoperability. RAM use has plummeted dramatically.
  • this is our present solution ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’ƒ

so, it can be done, but it's a bit of effort to get there, & won't be for everyone. fyi.

@itsfoss  #Kinoite is my Tower's newest, & 3rd, boot. I am enjoying it so much that nowadays i only return to my 1st-boot,   #ArchLinux #KDE #Plasma, on Sundays to do its weekly updates. My poor old 2nd-boot,  #SparkyLinux #Cinnamon, now seems to get any attention from me every blue moon or so. mind you, today i learned that the excellent Sparky Dev has added #Cosmic to their repos, so sometime soon i shall add that & who knows, maybe i might then spend more time in good ol' Sparky?

@kingtor well fwiw, i'm a "fediverse type", & i continue using my desktop Linux  with daily delight. i laugh about, often at, the many panic merchants volubly screaming to abandon ship now. so much operatic hysteria.

today i made a geeky early new year's eve vow to myself. henceforth, am gonna bung each new site #bookmark i create into a single folder, not my decades old complex hierarchy of squillions of folders with subfolders with subfolders etc, & instead begin assigning discrete firefox #Tags to each new BM. curious to assess how workable such a new paradigm will be for me.

@rob ha. i can see your point. i have a slight twist though on your theory. in my case, i did not reach a point recently of choosing  , but instead decided that i am now too old fat & lazy to still "enjoy" needing to do the various little bits & pieces to keep my  all ticketyboo, so decided to go #immutable #atomic for a quieter life. hence, lappy now is single-boot Kinoite, & tower is now triple-boot Kinoite / ArchLinux / SparkyLinux. so my details are different, but i think i do get the essence of your sentiment, & agree. fwiw.

@cheryanne i'm sure it seems bonkers, prolly outright unstable, to external eyes, & indeed maybe it is. tis just that, exactly like my years of linux distrohopping, i have certain ideas & preferences for how my ideal UI & UX might be, could be, should be, & am somewhat unwilling to tolerate unnecessary compromise, when there is a world of possibilities freely open to us. also, i am an ever-curious geek, who just loves exploration & learning. the one glaring "friction" difference twixt my analogy of distrohopping vs fedihopping, is my awareness that whilst the former affects only me, the latter affects other peeps too, & so for that reason i sincerely do try to moderate myself... but the pressure does grow over time, until... ๐Ÿคญ
