#Proton gives you 5 GB cloud storage for free. BUT with a caveat. You have to do 3 tasks in the first 30 days after the registration of your account:
1. Create a folder or upload a file
2. Create a shared link
3. Create a recovery method

Now the thing is: if you start out with #mail you also have to make some tasks, but at first it’s not so clear that if you don’t complete them within 30days, you’re burned forever also, even if you start out with drive much later. No way you can get those 3GBs additionally for free.

True story from the perspective of a small group of ppl. to switch from #Dropbox #GoogleDrive etc.

I mean: WTF Proton!?

Ich möchte erwähnen, dass ich von Programmierung (mit Ausnahme von etwas HTML und CSS) absolut keine Ahnung habe und bei jedem Nextcloud-Update hoffe, dass alles glatt läuft.
Aber das tut es und auch mein Kalender und To Do-Liste liegen dort.
Außerdem einige Dateien, die ich regelmäßig benötige (wie einst bei #Dropbox).
Will sagen: Wenn ich das mit etwas Herumprobieren und Reinfuchsen hinbekomme, schaffen viele andere das auch. Es macht sogar Spaß.

So, im giving `syncthing` a try because there's an official-ish android app fork for it, and its otherwise #FOSS on desktop (#linux at least). And I know that I could self-host my own discovery and pairing relays. Oh and the last de-#enshittification task on my journey to #selfhost emancipation is ditching #Dropbox. #Nextcloud would be my candidate if I needed my files to be web accessible (I don't - or I could use `copyparty` which is hecka good).
