Australia’s Second Largest River is Drying Up – Here’s Why It Matters
Dams have taken half the water from the Murrumbidgee River, Australia’s second longest, and climate change is set to make things worse. The vast Lowbidgee Floodplain, the river's largest wetland, is drying up – a serious threat to the plants, animals, and people who depend on it. Understanding what’s happening here is crucial if we’re going to find solutions.. #SaveOurRivers #Murrumbidgee #watermanagement #WaterWise #DriestcontinentonEarth

Dams have taken half the water from Australia’s second biggest river – and climate change will make it even worse

The Menindee Lakes, once a vital water source in NSW, have seen their levels drop drastically. In 1971, Australia produced 81,000 bales of cotton. By 2012, this surged to 5.3 million bales—a massive increase in a water-intensive crop that has reduced flows into the lakes. As cotton farming expanded, the region’s natural water supply has struggled, putting the Menindee Lakes and surrounding ecosystems at risk.

@InsurgoFormica History is repeating itself in #DriestcontinentonEarth. The Aral Sea disaster in Central Asia stands as a warning: Soviet-era cotton farming drained rivers feeding the sea, turning a thriving ecosystem into a barren desert. This environmental tragedy underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices in cotton farming to prevent similar damage elsewhere.

We've always called it the 'Mighty Murray.' But in recent years, our most iconic river has struggled to live up to the legend. In fact, it had slowed to a feeble trickle, sucked dry by years of drought and the demands of those who rely on its bounty. Then it rained. And rained. And, rained some more. The clouds that delivered such devastating floods to much of Queensland and Victoria, had one spectacular silver lining. The entire Murray-Darling river system has come roaring back to life.
