It can be funny when a sentence is translated and becomes much longer or shorter. Sometimes it's just a quirk of grammar, but sometimes the translator is using poetic license.

This is from "A Handbook of Kannada Proverbs, with English Equivalents" (1912) by Narasinga Rao. The other entries seem to be about equal length in Kannada and English, but here are two full sentences in the original boiled down to only five words. I wish the author had included a transliteration too, not just an "equivalent." What was culturally analogous to "Fame is a magnifying glass" in southern India a century ago?
