I've been so lucky, my mom recently visited me and brought me zung2, two savoury versions made using glutinous rice, another with millet plus a sweet one with sago. It's like a 3-course meal! She was up till 5am making these over two-days, to say this was a labour of love is an understatement! I love you, mom! ❤️

The story behind why we eat zongzi: They commemorate the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). When his state (Chu) fell to Qin state, he drowned himself. The mourning locals went out onto the river in boats (hence today's dragon boats) and threw glutinous rice into the water so the fish would eat that instead of his body. Qu Yuan is also known for his poem Tianwen, which posed many questions about the universe. And now, over 2,000 years later, China's Mars mission Tianwen is named after that poem. 🚀🌌 #dragonboatfestival #zongzi #glutinousrice #chinese #端午节 #端午節 #粽子 #dwanwujie #dwanwufestival #stickyrice #foodie #chinesefood #rice #culture #heritage #tradition #history #chinesehistory #ancientchina #chineseamerican #chineseculture #dumpling #dumplings #cooking #eeeeeats #foodstagram #nomnom #kitchen".
