Shades Of Blue by Don Rendell Ian Carr Quintet, released on Columbia as part of their Landsdowne series in 1965.

Gerald Lascelles wrote in a contemporary review in Jazz Journal:

The quintet stimulates a remarkably fresh feeling, and reveals little in the way of adherence to any particular jazz form. The leader’s constant shifts from tenor to soprano keep the front line alive and variable in tone contrast, and there is a constancy in the rhythmic response which is quite rare and always animated.

Ian Carr, who has been working with Don since the beginning of 1963, provides some splendid moments in solo work, ...Garrison ’64 is quite an ambitious approach to the new patterns set by Coltrane, Davis, and the other leaders of style today. It would be wrong to describe it as free form, but it conveys the same loose feeling.

Dusk Fire by Don Rendell Ian Carr 5tet, released on Columbia in 1966.

Kenneth Bridgham wrote on Allmusic:

A superb blending of both jazz and classic elements into a third stream. Both the concept and the trumpet sound are very obviously indebted to Miles Davis, but that does not change the fact that this is beautiful music to behold, whether one is looking to intensely focus on the minimalism of every note or just medidate to the overall experience.

Today's random #Discogs choice Don Rendell Ian Carr Quintet and Shades Of Blue 2019 reissue. What a fabulous, cool jazz album this is. And what a cool sleeve. Picking a favourite track is hard but I'm going with Shades Of Blue.

Live At The Avgarde Gallery Manchester by Don Rendell With The Joe Palin Trio Featuring Guest Pete Martin, released on Spotlite Records in 1975.

London Jazz Collector wrote:

Rendell’s Space Walk album includes three compositions featured in this Avgarde session, which Rendell says are now more satisfactory interpretations. ...Rendell claims Palin and his trio had not heard the Space Walk album before. The readings are similar but the Manchester live recording, despite some rough edges, has a raw pungency which is quite attractive.

On the track Antibes, Pete Martin holds down beautiful counter-figure harmonies as Rendell leads the iconic melody. It has a live club-date feel which is forgiving of any lack of studio polish. In the studio, take 25 may have no faults, but the musicians long-robbed of spontaneity, and wanting to get down the pub.

Roarin’ by Don Rendell Quintet released on Jazzland in 1961.

Dean of Ace Records wrote:

“Roarin'” is by far the most far-reaching of Rendell’s early releases. In early 1961, he had put together a new Quintet and had started to work club dates. The band included Phil Kinorra and Tony Archer on drums and bass, both youngsters, but already with the experience of playing alongside Jackie McLean and Freddie Redd in the London production of the play The Connection.

Pianist John Burch was a long-time associate who provided a stability at the centre of the group. The wild card was the 23-year-old alto player Graham Bond, who is described as having a contrasting melodic approach to the saxophone rather than harmonic one of Don Rendell.."
