Robert the Devil

In Latin: Robertus Diabolus.

He’s a legend of medieval origin about a Norman knight who finds out he’s the son of… (bum, bum, buuum!) Satan. This story started in France in the 13th century.

The story goes:

A duchess of Normandy who was tormented with a desire to have kids but couldn’t have any. She got tired of waiting on God (who wasn’t listening to her). So she decides to ask the Devil. The Devil compiles.

A son is born! As an infant, he bites his nurse & pulls her hair out. As a “lad,” he knifes his teachers. At age 20, he became a bandit chief. He’s then dubbed a knight. This was because of the belief that the wicked instincts raging in him would be subdued. But this only made him worse than before. No one could surpass him in strength or in courage.

In a tourney, he overthrows & slays 30 opponents. Then he goes roaming about the world. He then goes back to his homeland. He restarts his banditry – robbing, arson, murdering, ravishing. One day, after unaliving all the nuns of a certain abbey, he remembers his mom. He goes looking for her.

The servants scatter in every direction when they see him coming. No one waits around to talk to him to find out what in the world he wants. Right at this time, Robert had an epiphany. For the 1st time ever, he becomes conscious of his own monstrous wickedness. He becomes remorseful for his actions. He wanted to know what made him the way he was.

Robert then goes to his mom. And at literal sword point, he tells her to tell him the truth about his birth. After learning the truth, he freaks out, man! But his sturdy nature isn’t weakened. He doesn’t despair. Instead, the hope of a laborious redemption, of a marvelous victory, urges & spurs on his proud spirit.

He’ll learn to conquer Hell, to subdue himself, to foil the designs of his dad (Satan), who’s made home a docile instrument of destruction & of sin. He makes no delay. He goes straight to Rome, casts himself to the harshest kind of penance, makes confession to be a holy hermit, & swears that henceforth he’ll taste no food that he hasn’t snatched from the jaws of a dog.

On 2 separate occasions, when Rome was besieged by the Saracens, he fought incognito for the Emperor & gained the W for the Christians. Recognized at last, he refused all rewards & honors, the imperial crown, & even the monarch’s own daughter. He goes away to live as a hermit in the wilderness. He dies a saint, blessed by both God & men.

In other accounts, he finally marries the princess who’s deeply in love with him.

The oldest known account of this legend is a Latin prose narrative by a Dominican Friar, Etienne de Bourbon (circa 1250). It then shows up in a French metrical romance of the 13th century. From France, the legend spread to Spain. In England, the subject was treated in the metrical romance Sir Gowther (circa 14th century). In this version, the devil disguises himself as the mom’s husband.

Il Fatto Quotidiano: Elia Del Grande di nuovo in fuga, il triplice omicida è scappato da una casa lavoro di Alba (Cuneo)

Lo ha rifatto a distanza di cinque mesi. Elia Del Grande è evaso da una casa lavoro ad Alba (Cuneo), dando il via a una vasta operazione di ricerca estesa dall’intero Piemonte all’Italia centrale e settentrionale. Particolare attenzione è rivolta a Cadrezzate, il comune del Varesotto dove Del Grande è nato e cresciuto, e dove il 7 gennaio 1998 ha compiuto un triplice omicidio: uccise il padre, la madre e il fratello, opponendosi al matrimonio con la giovane dominicana di cui era innamorato.
La fuga non è la prima della sua vita: lo scorso 30 ottobre Del Grande era già scappato da una casa lavoro nel modenese. Dopo settimane di latitanza, durante le quali si muoveva di notte sul lago con un pedalò, era stato fermato dai Carabinieri del nucleo operativo di Varese e Modena e del Ros lo scorso 12 novembre. Per il triplice omicidio, Del Grande ha scontato 25 anni di carcere. Le autorità invitano la popolazione a fornire ogni possibile informazione utile alle ricerche, soprattutto nelle zone a lui più familiari.
Il 7 gennaio 1998, allora 22enne, sterminò a fucilate tutta la famiglia (padre, madre e fratello) in quella che venne soprannominata la “strage dei fornai”. Per il triplice omicidio fu condannato prima all’ergastolo, pena poi ridotta in appello a 30 anni. Grazie ai vari benefici ne ha trascorso in cella 25. Per il triplice omicidio, Del Grande era già uscito quindi dal carcere. I giudici del tribunale di Sorveglianza lo avevano messo in libertà vigilata perché ritenuto socialmente pericoloso, a fronte di furti ed episodi di molestie al vicinato, decidendo per lui la misura del collocamento nella casa-lavoro del Modenese, dove si trovava da settembre.

He redid it five months later. Elia Del Grande has escaped from a workhouse in Alba (Cuneo), triggering a large-scale search operation extending throughout the Piedmont region and central and northern Italy. Particular attention is being paid to Cadrezzate, the municipality of Varesotto where Del Grande was born and raised, and where on January 7, 1998, he committed a triple murder: he killed his father, his mother, and his brother, resisting the marriage with the young Dominican woman he was in love with.

The escape is not the first of his life: on October 30th, Del Grande had already fled from a workhouse in Modena. After weeks of hiding, during which he moved around at night on the lake with a pedal boat, he was stopped by the Carabinieri (Italian military police) of the operational units in Varese and Modena and the ROS (Rapid Intervention Squad) on November 12th. For the triple murder, Del Grande served 25 years in prison. Authorities are asking the public to provide any possible information useful to the search, especially in areas familiar to him.

On January 7, 1998, at age 22, he systematically murdered the entire family (father, mother, and brother) in what became known as the “baker’s massacre.” For the triple murder, he was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, a sentence later reduced on appeal to 30 years. Agi: Giovane morto a Parma, arrestata la fidanzata 21enne

AGI - È stata arrestata dai carabinieri del Nucleo investigativo di Parma, su disposizione della Procura, la 21enne di origine cubana, Brenda Alesandrina Fumagalli, ritenuta responsabile dell'omicidio volontario del compagno convivente Critopher Gaston Ogando, 28 anni, di origini dominicane, morto nel capoluogo emiliano il 5 marzo in ospedale dopo essere stato colpito con un'arma da taglio il giorno precedente in un'abitazione di Borgo Riccio. Per la giovane sono stati disposti i domiciliari con braccialetto elettronico.
In un primo momento la donna aveva parlato di un incidente domestico; "Stavo cucinando - disse dopo i fatti -, stavamo scherzando, mi sono girata". Una versione ribadita agli inquirenti, secondo cui l'uomo si sarebbe avvicinato alle spalle per gioco e si sarebbe di fatto "auto-trafitto". Gli accertamenti tecnici e le testimonianze raccolte hanno però delineato un quadro diverso, indicando - secondo quanto evidenziato anche dal gip - un colpo inferto frontalmente, dall'alto verso il basso e da sinistra a destra, incompatibile con la ricostruzione fornita dalla 21enne. Anche una ferita a forma di "S" sulla mano della donna, da lei attribuita al recupero del coltello, sarebbe invece riconducibile, per il giudice, a una lesione "da scivolamento" provocata durante l'azione violenta.
Le indagini e la misura cautelare
Dalle indagini emerge inoltre un contesto relazionale segnato da tensioni: la giovane, descritta come dal "temperamento forte, irascibile, possessiva e incline a scatti d'ira", avrebbe più volte aggredito verbalmente e fisicamente il compagno. La misura cautelare è motivata dal rischio di reiterazione del reato e da una "manifesta incapacità di contenere i propri impulsi violenti". La 21enne è stata rintracciata in provincia di Milano ed è in attesa dell'interrogatorio di garanzia.

A.G.I. – A 21-year-old of Cuban origin, Brenda Alesandrina Fumagalli, was arrested by the Carabinieri’s Investigative Unit in Parma, on the order of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and is being held responsible for the voluntary murder of her boyfriend, Critopher Gaston Ogando, 28, of Dominican origins, who died in the city of Parma on March 5th in a hospital after being struck with a cutting weapon the day before in a residence in Borgo Riccio. House arrest was ordered for the young woman with an electronic bracelet.

Initially, the woman had spoken of a domestic accident; “I was cooking – she said after the events – we were joking, I turned around.” This version was reiterated to investigators, according to which the man had approached her from behind in jest and had effectively “self-inflicted” the wound. However, forensic examinations and testimonies collected have outlined a different picture, indicating – as also highlighted by the investigating judge – a blow struck from the front, from top to bottom, and from left to right, incompatible with the reconstruction provided by the 21-year-old. The “S” shaped wound on the woman’s hand, attributed by her to recovering the knife, would instead be attributable, according to the judge, to a “slip” injury caused during the violent action.

Investigations and Precautionary Measures

The investigations also reveal a relational context marked by tensions: the young woman, described as having a “strong, irritable, possessive temperament and prone to fits of rage,” had repeatedly verbally and physically assaulted her boyfriend. The precautionary measure is justified by the risk of recidivism and a “manifest inability to control her violent impulses.” The 21-year-old was located in the province of Milan and is awaiting the preliminary hearing.
