70年代、フィリピンの独裁者、マルコス大統領は、労働者を輸出することで外貨を稼ぐ政策を進めた。それ以来、多くのフィリピン人、特に女性が、欧州、米国、オーストラリア、最近ではサウジアラビア、クェート、カタールなど中近東の国々で、家政婦や介護職など未熟練労働者として働いている。英国でも富裕層の家政婦や子供の世話をする下働きの労働力として重宝されているが、雇い主にビザ獲得や更新を頼るため、低い賃金、劣悪な労働条件や環境を受け入れざる得ない例が後を絶たない。この記事ではそのような出稼ぎのフィリピン人労働者に取材、彼女たちの置かれた英国の厳しい環境を紹介するほか、フィリピン現地取材により、出稼ぎ労働をしなければならない社会環境もレポートしている。

Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Hermono, said Malaysian employers who are abusive to their Indonesian workers will be barred from entering Indonesia. The first Malaysians set to be barred were actually acquitted by a Malaysian court in a recent employment abuse case.
There are nearly 700,000 documented Indonesian workers in Malaysia and hundreds of thousands more undocumented, but the Ambassador said the prohibition will apply regardless of the status of the worker or whether the employer has been convicted.
The ban will apply to any Malaysian employer judged as being abusive to Indonesian workers by the Indonesian government. There’s no word yet whether the ban will be temporary, permanent, or if it can be revoked.
A lawyer in Singapore, who helped defend an Indonesian maid (domestic worker) against accusations of theft by Singapore's Changi Airport Group chairman, has been praised for his work by the presiding judge.
