This is my clay pipe fragment collection.

The loose ones are all from my garden (house is probably ex-farmhouse, built c. 1840). The ones in the bag are local, but from not-my-garden.

I like how they are all different thicknesses. A couple of fragments seem to be mouth-end ones. I do not have any bits that have enough intact bowl to identify much information/guess a date.

The single piece is my newest addition. I forgot about it temporarily as it was still drying from being washed.

I guess I'm sharing this because I find it interesting and probably someone on the Fediverse will find it interesting too. Or at least it'll break up doomscrolling.

How did an old metal plaque from #Boston end up in a #compost heap in #VictoriaBC? My family had Boston connections in the early 1900s, and they seem to be manifesting a century later, out of my late Nana’s garden! #SuburbanArchaeology #DomesticHistory #PotterandWatkins #MilkStreet #history #insurance

Hey, #DomesticHistory, #history and #folklore etc. people, I have a random knowledge request

I just randomly thought: "Yes, there used to be a type of bush people used to plant close to their homes because it was easy to hang laundry to dry on it - it had nice sturdy branches with minimal gunk most of the year, also it was good for making broomsticks."

I'd like to know if anyone else has ever heard of this or if my brain decided to hallucinate this random "fact" as if it read it somewhere 😄

Weather like this makes us appreciate modern conveniences so much!

Imagine dealing with snow in layers of cotton & wool, then hand washing and drying by the open fire.

How would a wool coat (if you could afford one) ever get properly dry from now to March?
