Advice might be found in the videos of
Jackson Galaxy, e.g. "bored cat".

Also, instead of simply putting the food in a bowl in front of him, make him hunt for it, like hiding all dry food morsels in the apartment.
Searching for food is a fulltime job for a free-roaming cat outside ... We take that away from our pets, which can result in boredom.

Search "foraging toys for cats", too.
