❗️ #Moldova has declared an environmental alert due to pollution of the #Dniester_River, #President_Sandu said.
#Russia's war is not just "the war in #Ukraine." It has global aftermath.
The cause was a massive #Russian strike on the #Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant on March 7. The alert will remain in effect for 15 days, starting March 16, 2026.
The main consequences of the attack:
▪️ Damage to the railway
As a result of the strikes, the railway infrastructure was damaged. Therefore, some trains in the #Rivne, #Vinnytsia, and #Zhytomyr regions are forced to change routes, and there may be delays in their movement.
▪️ #Chernivtsi region
According to preliminary information, the attack was aimed at the #Dniester hydro-accumulating power station - one of the largest #HAPS in the world.

There wasn't a natural border like the #Dniester river, there wasn't an underlying ethnic tension to exploit, there was a lot more attention of the West focused on the Baltic states, and after the failed #KGB putsch in August 1991 they gave up.
When the #USSR disintegrated, #Transnistria was torn from #Moldova. A thin strip of land on the #Dniester River with #Ukraine on the other side, dominated by old #SovietUnion military depots, it has remained in limbo since the early 1990s, unrecognized by most of the world, a forgotten backwater, similar to #Kaliningrad, as an outpost of #Russian #imperialism and #colonialism
