My new favourite chess Grandmaster.

Divya Deshmukh, 20 years old from India, is currently playing at the prestigious Fide Candidates tournament, where it is already an achievement to qualify for being allowed to participate. The photo is from the official Fide (international chess federation) Flickr site and is taken at that event.

It looks like she's making a name for herself, not just for bold moves and fierce fights, but also for showing up in very stylish outfits.

19 year old #DivyaDeshmukh on July 29 beats #KoneruHumpy to win the #Women's World #Chess Championship

She wasn't even Grand Master ranked

(She gets the GM rank now, outside the usual path, merely by winning this event)

Koneru Humpy is no pushover

She became GM at age 15 (barely) in 2002, the youngest female player ever to achieve that at the time:

The torch is passed

Great things lie ahead for Divya

Gukesh Dommaraju, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Vidit Gujrathi and others have reiterated the impact Anand has had on their chess journeys.
