#Maine #GovernorJanetMills releases $1.25 million to help #FoodBanks respond to #SNAP losses

Mills also has not ruled out calling a special session of the Legislature so roughly 170,000 Mainers don’t lose federal food assistance.

by Randy Billings. October 30, 2025

FALMOUTH — "Gov. Janet Mills said Wednesday that her administration is releasing an additional $1.25 million in funding for food pantries and anti-hunger programs in a bid to keep nearly 170,000 low-income Maine families from losing assistance during the federal government shutdown.

"Mills said the funding would be distributed through the #GoodShepherdFoodBank and the #AreaAgenciesOnAging to support programs such as #MealsOnWheels and other anti-hunger organizations.

" 'When the federal government fails, Maine will not,' Mills said in a written statement. 'When challenges arise, Maine people step up.'

"Mills is using $1 million from the governor’s contingency account and the John T. Gorman Foundation is providing $250,000. The Portland nonprofit noted that 55,000 children could lose food assistance.

"Heather Paquette, president of Good Shepherd, said in a written statement that the funding will help support nearly 600 food pantries and other partner organizations across the state.

" 'Our partners on the front lines are facing an overwhelming need for food right now and these funds will go to work immediately to help ensure everyone in Maine has access to the food they need to feed themselves and their families during this uncertain time,' Paquette said.

[...]

"Some other states are also announcing emergency funding for food banks and food assistance programs in anticipation of the loss of SNAP benefits. #Minnesota, for example, has announced $4 million for food assistance programs, and #NewYork is committing $30 million."

#GovernorJanetMills calls on #Trump to tap emergency reserves to fund #FoodStamps

by Christopher Burns, October 30, 2025

Excerpt: "Mills and the other governors said in their letter that the anti-hunger program prevents low-income Americans from having to make 'impossible choices' between eating or taking medication, between eating or heating their homes, between eating or going to the doctor.

" '#SNAP lifts families out of poverty by allowing them to spend money that would otherwise have been used for food on rent, heat, or health care,' they wrote."

Regional Partnership Brings Together Public Health Agencies and Leaders to Share Expertise, Improve Coordination, and Promote and Protect Evidence-Based Public Health

Work Groups Created to Identify Opportunities for Collaboration Including Public Health Emergency Preparedness, Vaccine Recommendations, Data Collection, Infectious Disease Management and Laboratory Services

September 18, 2025 — "Several Northeastern states and America’s largest city have been collaborating since early 2025 and today formally announced the Northeast Public Health Collaborative, a voluntary regional coalition of public health agencies and leaders, brought together to share expertise, improve coordination, enhance capacity, strengthen regional readiness, and promote and protect evidence-based public health.

"The Collaborative’s shared purpose is to work together in new ways – optimizing the use of shared resources, innovating and reimagining core services – to ensure trust in public health, respond to public health threats, advance community health and strengthen confidence in vaccines and science-based medicine. The group’s shared goal is to protect the health, safety and well-being of all residents by providing information based on science, data, and evidence, while working to ensure equitable access to vaccines, medications and services.

"The regional partnership, which was informally established several months ago, held its first in-person meeting in Rhode Island in August. The Collaborative has already formed interjurisdictional working groups to identify opportunities for collaboration and shared planning across multiple public health disciplines including public health emergency preparedness and response, vaccine recommendations and purchasing, data collection and analysis, infectious disease, epidemiology and laboratory capacity and services.

"Members of the Collaborative worked together on science-based guidance for health care personnel (HCP) advising on precautions health care workers should take to protect themselves and patients during respiratory virus season. Other examples of collaborative efforts include sharing information on public health emergency preparedness related to three FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) World Cup host cities within the collaborative, exploring workforce pipeline activities given the understaffing in public health and coordinating state lab related activities and services."

Despite new federal guidelines, #JanetMills looks to expand #Covid19 vaccine availability in #Maine

WATERVILLE — "Gov. Janet Mills said Monday she’s working to ensure that Mainers who want to get a COVID-19 vaccination at local pharmacies without a prescription can get one.

" 'We’re working with the attorney general’s office in Maine to clarify whether we can issue a standing order and take measures like that,' she told reporters. 'We want to make sure everyone who wants to get a shot can get one.'

"She expects more information to come out this week.

"Last week, Massachusetts Gov. #MauraHealey took steps to ensure that vaccines, including those for COVID, flu and RSV, remain readily available and covered by insurance.

"Like Maine, Massachusetts is one of 16 states prohibited from offering COVID vaccines at pharmacies without a prescription following new federal guidelines restricting who is eligible for the shot.

"The federal guidelines issued Aug. 27 authorize vaccines for those 65 and older or those with at least one underlying medical condition. Others need a prescription to get the vaccine.

"In response, the Massachusetts public health commissioner issued an order Sept. 3 allowing pharmacies to continue to provide COVID shots to those 5 and older, according to Healey’s office. That prompted CVS and Walgreens pharmacies in Massachusetts to work toward making appointments available, the governor’s office said in a press release.

"Healey’s office also noted that it is 'leading efforts to create a public health collaboration with states in #NewEngland and across the #Northeast committed to safeguarding public health as the federal government backs away from its responsibilities.'

"Mills said in Maine, officials need to ensure pharmacists and physicians are protected from 'any liability' that might arise from the discrepancy between state and federal guidelines.

"After attending a Rotary meeting in Waterville, Mills mentioned the group’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. As she mulls a run for U.S. Senate — a decision she’ll announce in November — she said changes to the federal public health system are one of her top concerns.

" 'The current state of affairs, the state of flux in the public health system nationally is of great concern right this minute,' she said.

#Maine rejects #JusticeDepartment’s request for all #voters’ personal info, list of election officials

Secretary of State #ShennaBellows' responded to the request by telling the DOJ to "go jump in the Gulf of Maine."

by Dylan Tusinski, July 29, 2025

AUGUSTA — "Maine is denying the U.S. Department of Justice access to its voter registration records, state officials said Tuesday, rejecting an unprecedented request for sensitive voter data that the Trump administration has now delivered to all 50 states.

"A letter late last week to Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and signed by Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney General Michael Gates claims Maine had roughly 11,000 voters with duplicate registration. It requested the state’s entire voter registration list dating back to November 2022 'to ensure that ineligible voters are being removed.'

"The state has 14 days to respond to the letter dated July 24.

"Bellows, who is also a Democratic candidate for governor, said in a press conference Tuesday the Trump administration is overstepping its bounds, empowering false narratives and 'trying to change the topic away from the Epstein files.'

" 'Article 1 of the Constitution places the states — not President Trump, not the federal government — in charge of federal elections,' she said. 'The DOJ doesn’t get to know everything about you just because they want to.'

"Bellows’ office is coordinating with Maine’s Office of Attorney General to draft a formal response, she said.
The Maine Republican Party has previously claimed widespread voter fraud across the state, but a subsequent investigation by Bellows’ office concluded this month and found those claims were baseless. Just because someone is registered to vote in two different towns doesn’t mean they intended to vote twice. Often, it simply means that they moved between elections.

"A spokesman for Maine Senate Republicans declined to comment on the DOJ’s request or Bellows’ response. Other Maine GOP officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

"In addition to #VoterRegistration information, the DOJ also has requested the names of local election officials as well as information about noncitizens, felons, and deceased people’s alleged participation in Maine elections following President Donald Trump’s repeated false claims that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen from him.

" 'Please provide a description of the steps that Maine has taken, and when those steps were taken, to identify registered voters who are ineligible to vote as well as the procedures it used to remove those ineligible voters from the registration list,' the DOJ’s letter reads.

"The DOJ has not publicly said why they are seeking voter records across the country. Asked about the request to Maine and other states, spokesperson Pierson Furnish replied in an email 'No comment.'

"The first Trump administration similarly made requests to view all Americans’ voter information in 2017. Then-Secretary of State Matt Dunlap said at the time he would release voters’ names, ages, residences and districts with the government, as allowed by Maine law.

"The American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU] of Maine said the DOJ’s actions both now and then are part of 'a clear pattern of intimidation' and applauded Bellows’ refusal to share voters’ information.

" 'This letter also fuels #FalseNarratives that sow distrust in our elections. Maine elections are safe, secure, and accessible, and that’s why Maine consistently has some of the highest voter turnout,' said Samuel Crankshaw, the group’s communications director. 'Our government should focus on helping more people exercise their fundamental rights.'

Maine’s voter turnout is reliably high compared to other states and more Mainers voted in 2024 than in any election before, according to state voting data.

"The Justice Department initially reached out to swing states like #Michigan, #Arizona and #Wisconsin, where local election clerks have reported federal agents requesting broad access to the states’ #RegistrationRolls and #VotingMachines.

Now, Bellows said all 50 states have received similar letters. #Maine, #Minnesota and #NewHampshire are the only states to have rejected the requests so far."

PORTLAND (WGME) -- "The Department of Homeland Security is putting more than 500 '#SanctuaryJurisdictions' across the country on notice.

"The Trump administration says cities and counties on the list are obstructing immigration enforcement and standing in the way of President Donald Trump's #MassDeportations.

"Portland, #CumberlandCounty and #HancockCounty made the list in #Maine.

"Cumberland County believes it made the list because it won't illegally hold detainees for ICE and won't do ICE's job.

"The Trump administration is increasing pressure on communities it claims are protecting people who they say are 'violent criminal illegal aliens.' " [You know, like trade workers and business owners!]
