The Fediverse Stats Paradox

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The more I use WordPress, and the more they change the UI, the more I want to dump it. These stats, instead of encouraging me to use wordpress, and the fediverse, encourage me to dump both.

Blogging shouldn’t be about metrics, it should be about the development of thoughts and ideas, and the occassional feedback. These stats turn blogging and writing into accounting. I don’t want to see disengagement quantified. I want positive signals, and here I only see negative signals.

A quotation from Bill Watterson

CALVIN: I’ve decided to stop caring about things. If you care, you just get disappointed all the time. If you don’t care, nothing matters, so you’re never upset. From now on, my rallying cry is, “So what?!”
HOBBES: That’s a tough cry to rally around.
   CALVIN: So what?!

Calvin and Hobbes (1993-01-02)

A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

Truly it is a sad thing for a people, as for a man, to fall into Scepticism, into dilettantism, insincerity; not to know Sincerity when they see it. For this world, and for all worlds, what curse is so fatal? The heart lying dead, the eye cannot see.

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Scottish essayist and historian

Soon enough we'll have a proper CTA, pretty much asking for historical examples of communities disengaging from cruel systems and nurturing their own alternatives.

A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

Like everything else in the world, however, there is a price to pay for love, for the more happiness we derive from the existence and companionship of other human beings, the more vulnerable we are when there is any cause for apprehension. It takes courage to love, but pain through love is the purifying fire which those who live generously know. We all know people who are so much afraid of pain that they shut themselves up like clams in a shell and, giving out nothing, receive nothing and therefore shrink until life is a mere living death.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) First Lady of the US (1933-45), politician, diplomat, activist
Column (1939-04-01), “My Day”
