For centuries, the history of the West African kingdom of Kaabu, which thrived from the mid-1500s to the 1800s and spanned parts of modern-day Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Gambia, has been preserved through oral traditions, and particularly by griots - oral historians who sang of its rulers. Musician Nino Galissa, a descendant of the griots who sang for Kaabu's last emperor, blended traditional storytelling with archaeological findings to share the kingdom's history more effectively. The dig also uncovered evidence of extensive trade with Europeans, including Venetian beads and Dutch gin. Researchers have verified many long-sung events, including Kansala's dramatic end in the 1860s when its king ignited a gunpowder store during a siege.
