Chicago, 12 juillet 1979 : le bûcher des vanités disco

Retour sur la Disco Demolition Night, étrange et inquiétante performance organisée l’été 1979 dans un stade de baseball de Chicago, afin de contrer la suprématie de la musique disco.

I was a kid in #Chicago when Steve Dahl’s “Disco Demolition Night” went down. Seen through a tiny TV on the nightly news, the hatred —and who was hated— was still obvious and worrying. Even before then, people had used racist and homophobic slurs to refer to this music. Joke’s on the haters though. #Disco —> Chicago House —> nearly half the stuff people groove to these days. 🪩

Drinking cheap Pinot Grigio from Trader Joe's. It's really not bad!

I think Ward's failure to have another hit was a consequence of the late seventies /early eighties antidisco movement. I'd like to read more about the origins and significance of that movement.

🧵 It's worth mentioning the racially-charged context of Levan's residency at the Paradise Garage: the #DiscoDemolitionNight, which was in part a rejection of gay and Black musicians by white America, occurred just as Levan's career was lifting off. House music represents, in some sense, an artistic #resistance movement, and an affirmation of the contributions that Black and gay artists have made to dance music. [end of thread]
