Final grades posted this morning. For my first semester in grad school I got.... ALL A's

Like push me off my chair with a feather. I knew I was doing okay, but this... like I'm not 'tupid (to quite my cousin when he was like 6). To this disabled neurodivergent person, to know that there's something I'm good at and it's what I'm passionate about -- Just all the feels, y'all. All the feels.

There is still time to join @DisabledInSTEM's Mentorship Program!

I know I'm including a lot of higher education hashtags, but you don't need to be in academia to participate. The @DisabledInSTEM mentorship program has run for multiple years now and is a great success.

Please share the word!

DisabledInSTEM Mentee Application 2024

Thank you for your interest in becoming a mentee for Disabled in STEM! This is the third year of the program and we have decided to mix it up a bit! We are going to be offering mentoring pods, which will allow for interactions between multiple mentees and mentors. The goal of these mentoring pods are to provide disabled individuals in STEM with a mentor(s) who could help guide them through the process, such as by working on soft skills related to excelling in STEM, such as interviewing, personal statements, networking, etc. Please only apply to this program if you have a disability and are in a STEM-field (including psychology!). Mentors are volunteers who are committed to helping those DisabledInSTEM succeed. Some have a disability themselves and some are allies. We cannot guarantee that your mentor(s) will be in the same field as you are, but there's still a lot that can be learned and connected through this experience! As part of the program, mentoring pods will be asked to meet monthly along with setting goals/tasks to be completed. Tasks may be reading assignment related to a career, attending a conference, talking to someone else in the field, or anything else as it will be dependent on what works best for the members of your pod! If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us an email at: [email protected] Additional information about the program for mentees can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bA6kavCRxMZepczCWy7cpOSRLU2C6CXIkVB1HJSgl4g/edit?usp=sharing

Another resource I absolutely love is IncludEdu.

IncludEdu is a website for assistive technology. It's built for an audience of educators/younger learners BUT do not let that fool you. I have discovered lots of great plugins on IncludEdu.

You can search by Apple, Microsoft, or Google. Good source for accommodation ideas!

Another potential resource comes from Disabled Academic Collective. They did a thread a while ago on digital resources for disabled folks who wanted to find community online. They compiled the answers into "Community Resources" and posted it to their Resources page.

Disabled In Higher Ed's "Disabled in STEM/Academia Literature" spreadsheet is a collection of articles, blogs, etc. that may interest disabled students, staff, faculty, and anyone invested in accessibility in higher education.

Bonus for ADHD folks: there are summaries of what each item is.

Another resource is @DisabledInSTEM's Accessibility Review Form. This disability resource is for students (although I would love a version for staff/faculty...).

It's relatively new but a great place to check for academic ableism, success stories, and students can (& should) add to it.

The Job Accommodation Network is the first place I recommend people check out when thinking about potential disability accommodations. You can search by barrier or by disability or by job task.

For example, a graduate student could search for writing accommodations for their thesis.

I am so relieved to finally have a defense date. So. Close.

Admittedly, I’m still feeling more uneasy than I would prefer. #PhD #Dissertation #DisabledInAcademia #GradSchool
