Happy Labor Day to all my fellow disabled citizens. Once again, bend over.

A year ago today, it looked like there was hope that things might change, but as you know the world has gone to total shit in the last year, including efforts to finally end wage exploitation of disabled Americans; it looks like there is no relief in sight.

Before they killed the proposed amendment, did the Education and Workforce Committee consider or research the 10+ states that have made 14(c) certificate slave exploitation of individuals with disabilities illegal and what the impact of that was? They should have looked into that before they just dropped such a proposal.

Art from late 2024, for the Covid cautious queers zine 2. You can get it on Ko-fi, it's pay what you want.

All sales go towards disabled mutual aid.

As a new covid variant (NB 1.8.1) rapidly spreads, this is the perfect time to start taking covid-safety measures, if you haven't done yet. Wearing masks or respirators; getting your boosters; practicing safe-distancing; using air purifiers; and much more.

Even if something is out of your means, such as respirators, wearing a simple cloth mask is better than nothing. There are many low-cost or no cost ways to maximize their protection capabilities.

Don't just protect yourself, but others as well. Prevention is a form of community care, remember that. Solidarity with disabled and immunocompromised makes us stronger. ✨

The mind-body connection is real, and it's measurable. 🧠🔬💪

Studies show:
→ Chronic stress shrinks the hippocampus
→ Depression increases inflammatory markers
→ Anxiety alters gut microbiota

But here’s the hopeful part: every positive mental health choice also physically heals you.

I definitely appreciate the feedback, and I'm always wondering about alt text, as well as things like this. I'm sorry you have trouble with the colors on my site, but I see my friend Dyani is on the case. She's great like that, and she'll probably find something to help.

I use the color scheme and font for my own disabilities, to accommodate a few things. If you ever have time to chat back and forth, I'll be glad to change the theme around for you to sample. I can't guarantee the one that works best for you will be the one that I use, but we can try.

Accommodating others is important to me, but at the same time I have to accommodate my disabilities as well. I understand the dilemma and appreciate your patience and your feedback.

Update on the protest going on outside my building. It's the Metro Vancouver HandyDART drivers, who want to work under the same or similar contract as their colleagues in the Fraser Valley. But according to the flyer I got from one of the protesters, the company to which Translink are outsourcing the HandyDART service do not want them to have parity with their colleagues. Read more about what prompted the strike here: https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/08/29/handydart-union-strike-september-3 #DisabilitySolidarity

People with Disabilities and Extreme Heat
"Deaths of People with Disabilities Surge in Spain, As Does the Heat" – Human Rights Watch

People with physical and invisible disabilities are affected by heat in many different ways. Extreme heat in Spain, has taken the lives of approximately 1200 people since mid-July. The number of which are disabled, is unclear, but during the 2021 "heat dome" in British Columbia, Canada, 91% of those who died were disabled or chronically ill. I know heat certainly affects me. How does it affect you in relation to your disabilities?

The "Human Rights Watch" article linked below, reports on "the serious physical and mental health consequences heat has for people with disabilities". During their study of disabled residents of Andalusia, they found issues including: "gaps in public responses to protect the disabled... A lack of outreach services… and lack of data" about people with disabilities.

The "HRW" also cites a "LACK OF PARTICIPATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN SHAPING RESPONSES". People's hesitance to share disability related info for statistics is understandable, but advocacy and activism from the community is a key part in bringing change. Stand up, speak out and unite for disability rights and climate change. #DisabilitySolidarity

Deaths of People with Disabilities Surge in Spain, As Does the Heat

“It is unthinkable for me to go out. I could get a heatstroke,” Esther Laforge, 35, messaged me earlier this month. Esther, who lives outside of the Spanish city of Seville where temperature is expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius this week, has a physical disability that affects her body temperature regulation.
