Two new cavernicolous genera of Julidae(Diplopoda, Julida), with notes on the tribe Brachyiulini and on julid subanal hooks and anchors

Two remarkable genera and species of the millipede family Julidae, Titanophyllum spiliarum Julida and Mammamia profuga gen. n. sp. n., are described from caves in Greece and Italy, respectively. The presence of a flagellum and the absence of a ‘pro-mesomerital forceps’ on the gonopods place them in the tribe Brachyiulini Verhoeff, 1909, an unnatural grouping based on plesiomorphic characters. Both are outstanding in being the only hitherto known blind julidanssuch gonopodal features. A dichotomous key to the nine valid brachyiulinine genera based on peripheral and gonopodal characters is presented. Moreover, notes on subanal hooks and anchors in Julida are provided with hypotheses on their possible function.

I had just gotten home and was taking pics of the bristle millipedes that come out at night to browse the lichen on the stonework, when a neighbour, a middle-aged lady I sort of recognized but had never really spoken to, passed by and asked what I was doing, if I was making a movie or whatever. I explained I was looking at bugs and showed her the bristle millipedes. She excitedly said she liked bugs as well, cicadas and beetles and butterflies and such, and we mutually enthused for a few minutes. I guess talking to neighbours is sometimes worth it.

This millipede (Rhiscosomides meineri) has a special place in my heart. I had to reach out to a curator on iNaturalist to get the species added to the database after I found one! For #EarthDay, remember that even in big cities there are creatures we barely know about.

Häufig findet man den Großen Westlichen Bandfüßer (Polydesmus angustus) in der Laubstreu, unter Steinen, Rinde oder an Totholz. Sie besitzen keine Augen, tragen dafür aber eine massive "Ritterrüstung".
