“I intended to interview Diogo Jota, but he’s dead, damn it”: storm over the director of El Heraldo Deportes

I had intended to interview Diogo Jota, but he’s dead, damn it! The macabre joke written on X by Edgar Valero, a Mexican journalist and sports director of the Heraldo Media Group in Mexico, outraged the entire world of football. Considering that the post was theoretically meant to apologize for a disturbing error appearing in an article about the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal scheduled for March 29th, the journalist had written: “Martínez will exploit Ronaldo’s absence to test Gonçalo Ramos and evaluate Diogo Jota’s return.” The former Liverpool and Portuguese national team striker, as everyone knows, unfortunately died in July 2025 in a terrible traffic accident, along with his brother.

The error is serious, unforgivable. Indeed, it quickly unleashed the criticism of all fans in Mexico, Portugal, and England. Valero, however, responded with a clumsy reply, in which, besides the already cited macabre joke, he also wrote: “Okay… I’ll make sure the guy is still alive next time.” This lightness and superficiality were, of course, the cause of a new wave of criticism.

At that point, the Mexican journalist tried to make amends with a long post in which he attempted to justify his mistake: “Okay, let’s explain clearly what happened. It’s a serious error, I admit. I barely realized what I had written. And, incidentally, I know, naturally, that Jota is unfortunately gone. While writing the article, I thought of Rafael Leao,” he wrote. His explanation, however, is almost incomprehensible: “But the name of Jota came to mind, and, rereading the article, I realized my error. I corrected it, but some computer maniacs saved the version I had sent about 25 minutes earlier. I acknowledge my mistake and apologize to anyone who felt offended. There’s not much more to add.” Yes, indeed: Diogo Jota didn’t deserve this treatment.
