Not many are talking about it now, but in the VERY near future when robotics and AI can perform all labor (from raw material, to engineering, to manufacturing, to delivery, to support, to repair/replacement) cheaper than people can, humans will lose all their capitalist labor leverage. That won’t be just physical labor, but also much includes any mental work. That is wonderful if we all own the machines. We can use our time to explore with our new tools to discover more and enjoy our existence.
If however a few people/corporations “own the machines” then at that point, humans in general will not reap the benefits, and their only value to the owners will be as tenants and consumers. With no other leverage, that will create a race to the bottom, where the owners deliver as little as possible and profit by arbitrage of the difference.
For that reason, honest discussion about shared ownership of AI is very important now, though apparently we as a capitalist society are nowhere near ready to have that discussion.
