UK joins European deal to send rejected asylum seekers to third-country hubs | Refugees | The Guardian

Madeleine Sumption, the director of the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, said: “It’s not clear how much impact a political declaration makes given that judges’ decisions are also driven by domestic and international case law, which this declaration does not change. How much concrete difference it will make remains to be seen.”

Yvette Cooper, who finalised the agreement at the high-level meeting in Chişinău, Moldova, is expected to discuss hubs over the next two days.

The foreign secretary told the Guardian: “Reform and the Conservatives have called for the ripping up of international law altogether – even though those same international laws are essential to our law enforcement cooperation against the criminal smuggler gangs, or to upholding pillars such as the Good Friday agreement.

“The Greens have called instead for the ripping up of border controls – damaging our national security. Neither of their approaches delivers for our national interest.

“That is why Labour is reforming the ECHR with partners from across the continent, because we know the relationships we build abroad make us stronger at home.”

Stop Nakba Now: Hamburg camp to unite anti-war movements across Europe - DiEM25 Communications

Activists, movements and political organisations will gather in Hamburg from 9–16 May to build transnational solidarity against war, repression and austerity.

At a time of escalating wars, deepening militarisation, and accelerating authoritarianism across Europe, activists, movements, and political organisations are preparing to gather in Hamburg for a week of international solidarity and resistance.

From May 9 to 16, the “Bridges of Resistance” Camp will take place at Hamburg’s Moorweide, bringing together participants from across Europe and beyond to exchange strategies, connect struggles, and organise collective action against war policies, state repression, social injustice, and the rise of authoritarian politics.

Hamburg carries both symbolic and political significance for the mobilisation. As one of Germany’s most important ports, the city plays a central role in the global arms trade and in the infrastructure that sustains militarisation worldwide. Organisers say the camp aims to expose the links between war, political power, and economic interests — and to challenge the systems that profit from conflict and destruction.

DiEM25’s Mehran Khalili spoke with Yurii Sheliazhenko – Executive Secretary of the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, legal scholar, and recipient of the Seán MacBride Peace Prize. A declared conscientious objector since 1998, Sheliazhenko now faces trial on 13 May after being accused of justifying Russian aggression – based on a text that explicitly condemns the invasion.

“I am a citizen of Ukraine and a citizen of the world, seeking a very simple thing – peace in my country and everywhere else,” he says. “I’m not asking too much from humanity – just that every human being lives in dignity, and isn’t forced to participate in mass killing.”
