Died Pretty – Free Dirt (1986, Australia)
As randomly chosen by survey[1] on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 203 on The List, submitted by joostverweij.
Feeling pretty basic (/low on spoons), so here’s some bare bones facts about this one:
The band was originally named “Final Solution” after the 1976 single by Pere Ubu, which was itself named after the Sherlock Holmes’ book The Final Problem.
Free Dirt is Died Pretty’s debut album. It has a great cover. It’s 40 minutes and 10 tracks long. It’s lovely. It’s only been reissued on vinyl once, in 2022.
The band would go on to release 7 more studio albums, the last in 2000. Their 4th, Doughboy Hollow (1991), is considered by some to be their best.
They have a (now possibly defunct) blog run by guitarist/backing vocalist Brett Myers with some cool archive videos and whatnot.
Ron S. Peno, the lead singer, left us, in 2023 (RIP).
Hope you’re hanging in there, all.

Vale Ron Peno. He was the singer and driving force for the legendary Australian band Died Pretty. The band were magnificent when in full flight and I had many opportunities back in the mid-80s in Sydney.
