Pan de Muertos

The bread of the dead is bittersweet,
flavored with anise and oranges,
its golden crust glazed with sugar,
almost the color of marigolds.

The round loaf represen'
the circle of life and death.

On top, extra dough shapes
the skull and crossbones,
reminding us of the death
that waits under our living skin.

To taste the bread is to weep for
what has been lost, yet hope
for what is still to come.

Obviously, “The Book of Life” is centered around #DiaDeMuertos the annual (November 1st & 2nd) , Mexican holiday that honors the memory of people who have passed away. Usually, it involves altars at home and/or in public dedicated to friends & family know as ofrendas that features flowers, candles and favorite foods/items of passed loved ones (these are the ones at our and my grandparents’ house)
