The resignations by DoJ attorneys came as a result of a push by top Justice Department officials to investigate #Good’s #widow,

a move that has sparked outrage over the seeming mission to punish a family already grieving the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent’s💥 brutal and public killing of Good.

They also come after the DOJ has decided ❌ NOT to investigate Good’s killer,
#Jonathan #Ross.

Last week, Trump appointee
#Harmeet #Dhillon,
the assistant attorney general for civil rights,
informed the unit it would not be investigating Ross.

This week, Deputy Attorney General
#Todd #Blanche
— a Trump appointee who represented the president during his New York criminal trial
— said that there is 💥“no basis” to open an investigation into Ross.

The administration has mounted an
all-out effort to shield the ICE agent from any form of accountability,
🔥spreading lie after lie about Good and the circumstances surrounding her killing.

Among other things, the DOJ’s push will disrupt key fraud investigations in Minnesota.

Thompson and other prosecutors who stepped down in the Minnesota office were key figures in these probes of fraud that the Trump administration has claimed it’s cracking down on
— but has rather been seemingly using as
an excuse to eliminate and suspend
child care benefits in states that voted against him in the presidential election.

⚠️ The DOJ has opened an investigation into Good and her widow to probe possible connections to activist groups opposing Trump’s immigration raids.

🆘 Meanwhile, the FBI has assumed sole responsibility for the investigation into Ross,
and has cut out local prosecutors from being able to access information key to the case.

Federal agents’ violence has continued unchecked.

⭐️Activists said that a federal agent shot an activist in the face with a
“less lethal” weapon in the Los Angeles area on Friday
while he was engaged in a protest.

The activist went to the hospital, and
⛔️is
now blind in one eye as a result of the incident, he said.

DOJ Push to Investigate Renee Good’s Widow Sparks Mass Resignation

Rather than open an investigation into Good’s killer, top DOJ officials want to look into her grieving widow.

Truthout

CALL TO ACTION: #DOJ won’t investigate Renee Good’s killer, but they ARE investigating her widow. This is horrifyingly wrong. I am vibrating with rage right now. 6 more top tier prosecutors resigned rather than follow this outrageous demand by #Dhillon.

Make your voice heard by calling DOJ’s civil rights office at (202) 514-3847.

You can press 2 to bypass the long recorded message.

If no answer, leave a message stating your name and state of residence, and asking for
(1) a full investigation of the shooting of Renee #Good,
(2) accountability for her killer, and
(3) respect for her widow.

You can direct your message to Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

Together, we can make a difference.

The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed conservative lawyer
#Harmeet #Dhillon,
Donald Trump's choice to lead the Justice Department's
Civil Rights Division,
in a 52-45 vote.

One Republican, Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska,
voted no, along with Democrats.

Dhillon will oversee criminal and civil work ranging from
hate crime prosecutions
and voting rights litigation,
to investigating law enforcement agencies for engaging in patterns of discrimination

Trump's appointees have already made sweeping changes to the Civil Rights Division's personnel and priorities.

Several of its top officials were reassigned to work in a new office focused on immigration investigations into "sanctuary cities."

The department put the brakes on securing court-approved settlements with the Minneapolis and Louisville police departments to resolve civil rights investigations that were sparked by the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Last week, it announced an unprecedented civil rights investigation into whether the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is violating people's Second Amendment gun rights.

Dhillon, a staunch Trump supporter,
is the founder of the far-right Center for American Liberty.

At her confirmation hearing, she said she supports the Trump administration's efforts to ban the use of diversity, equity and inclusion policies by government and private corporations, calling such programs "illegal and unconstitutional."

Her nonprofit group says it advocates for the rights of Americans "left behind" by more traditional civil rights groups such as the NAACP LDF and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

"Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech,
representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID,
and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers,"
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform when he announced her nomination.

To bolster his efforts to control elections,
Trump has stacked the Department of Justice ( #DOJ ) with officials who have supported his baseless claims of rampant voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election
and who may have worked to overturn state election results on behalf of his campaign.

These include top officials like Attorney General #Pam #Bondi and FBI Director #Kash #Patel
— both of whom would not say who won the 2020 election during their confirmation hearings.

But it also includes those selected to lead offices that enforce federal laws protecting the right to vote.

Trump nominated #Harmeet #Dhillon, one of his loyal allies who has been involved in dozens of lawsuits challenging voting rights laws, redistricting and election processes,
to lead the Civil Rights Division.

Often referred to as the “crown jewel” of the DOJ, the division is core to protecting civil rights and liberties.

Dhillon has yet to be confirmed,
but the Civil Rights Division has already abruptly shifted away from defending voting rights.

So far, it’s dropped voting rights lawsuits against Texas, Virginia and Alabama.

It also retracted a previous request to participate in a lawsuit over unfair voting maps in Louisiana that’s set to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Weiner, the Brennan Center director, said that the country,
even in Trump’s first term,
never had a DOJ so readily turned into “the president’s personal law firm.”

“Which is just not what the DOJ is.
It’s just not what anyone has understood the DOJ to be,” Weiner said.

“But it is incredibly risky.”

In future elections, such officials may be more willing to not act if voting rights are threatened,
or could oppose efforts to protect voting rights.

They may also be more likely to pursue criminal investigations, and even prosecutions, against voters and election administrators over spurious allegations of fraud.

Looking Back at the People and Groups Who Tried to Disenfranchise Voters

— Matt Cohen

Throughout 2024, I spent a bulk of my time at Democracy Docket investigating the people and groups who tried to disenfranchise voters.

Countless hours of digging through nonprofit tax filings,
old press clippings and interviews
with dozens of various sources helped me produce more than a handful of deep dives on people like #Harmeet #Dhillon
— who Trump picked as assistant attorney general for civil rights
— and groups like the "Public Interest Legal Foundation" ( #PILF ) who’ve worked hard to manipulate the courts in order to suppress voting rights.

Looking back at seven features I wrote in 2024
— zeroing in on Dhillon and PILF,
along with groups like the "Arizona Free Enterprise Club",
"United Sovereign Americans",
"Judicial Watch",
"America First Legal"
and the "America First Policy Institute"
— they outline exactly how the incoming Trump administration will work to roll back voting rights:

weaponizing disinformation about rampant voter fraud and noncitizen voting -- to implement new rules and regulations for who can vote,
how and when.

The result will, inevitably, make it harder for millions of eligible voters to go to the polls.

⭐️But the best weapon to prevent this from happening is knowledge.

By continuing to report on various people and groups on the right and their efforts to disenfranchise voters,
it makes it harder for them to carry it out.

And so you can count on more from me doing just that in 2025.

Donald Trump picked #Harmeet #Dhillon,
a Maga darling and ardent supporter,
to lead civil rights cases at the US Department of Justice,
-- a sign of major changes ahead in the agency’s priorities.

Dhillon made her name in Maga circles by taking on culture-war cases as a San Francisco lawyer
and became a fixture in rightwing media,
appearing often on Fox shows.

She has filed various lawsuits over election “integrity” issues
and supported Trump’s quests to overturn results in 2020.

In announcing Dhillon’s nomination, Trump cited a laundry list of cases she’s working on,
including “taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech,
representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID,
and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers”.

He also mentioned how Dhillon’s lawsuits on election law fought to “ensure that all, and ONLY, legal votes are counted”.

“In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender of our Constitutional Rights,
and will enforce our Civil Rights and Election Laws FAIRLY and FIRMLY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I’m extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda,”
Dhillon wrote on Twitter/X after the nomination.

“It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country, and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers led by @PamBondi.
I cannot wait to get to work!”

Trump previously announced #Pam #Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida and a Trump defense attorney,
as his pick to lead the justice department.

As a lawyer in California, Dhillon has sued the University of California, Berkeley for its speech policies,
represented rightwing undercover operation Project Veritas and the former Fox host Tucker Carlson,
and filed lawsuits over pandemic restrictions.

She served as a legal adviser to Trump in 2020
and ran to replace Ronna McDaniel as chair of the Republican National Committee in 2023,
seeking to make the party organization more Trump-friendly.

During the 2024 election, she was dispatched to Arizona by the Trump campaign,
a decision that some saw as a sign the campaign was ready to make aggressive legal moves if needed to win there.

She founded a legal non-profit,
the Center for American Liberty,
which uses the courts to go after violations of civil liberties and defend against the
“coordinated assault on our civil liberties from corporations, politicians, socialist revolutionaries, and inept or biased government officials”,
the organization’s website says.

The wife of Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, #Usha #Chilukuri #Vance, and the couple's #children have become the targets of backlash for their Indian ancestry.

Chilukuri Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants who grew up in San Diego, as well as RNC speaker #Harmeet #Dhillon -- who is Sikh and Indian
– are facing anti-Asian hate from far-right figures online.

Posts appear to have spiked this week following Vance's nomination
criticizing Vance for marrying someone who is non-white,
expressing concerns about an influx of Indian immigrants as a result and the so-called #Great #Replacement #conspiracy
have garnered hundreds of thousands of views according to individual post engagement figures.

"Stop AAPI Hate", an advocacy group that tracks anti-Asian hate incidents,
condemned the attacks, arguing that the onslaught of hate has reinforced
“heightened levels of fear and anxiety Asian Americans and immigrants are currently experiencing across the country leading up to this year’s presidential election.”
